As the final episode of the Top Shot All Stars competition airs tonight a Michigan man remains in the running to win the title.
Phil Morden of Milford, Michigan is one of the final four contestants after a strong run in a season’s worth of competition. He is a video producer and 3-Gun competitor who first appeared in Top Shot season three.
Morden made it the individual competition that season to wear one of the coveted green shirts. He was to face controversial contestant Jake Zweig in an elimination challenge when Zweig suddenly quit the show. Instead Morden faced Mike Hughes, who returned to the show after being eliminated two days earlier.
In an earlier interview with the Michigan Firearms Examiner Morden explained that the fact that Hughes was able to return to the show after being eliminated gave him the advantage at the elimination challenge.
“Nothing against Mike Hughes. He’s a great shooter and a great guy, but, like he said, this did give him a second life in this competition,” Morden said. “After two days of being home, when I got sent home, my whole mindset had changed. I wanted to go back so badly because I had this completely new outlook on the competition and everything.”
Morden has put in a solid performance this season. In his only elimination challenge he faced Joe Serafini in a competition that required both men to fire crossbows at moving targets. During practice Morden made it a point to master quickly and correctly reloading the crossbow and that strategy seemed to win him the contest as Serafini burned up time struggling with the reloads during the challenge.
In the 11th episode Morden went on to win the individual challenge by hitting six targets while firing a Browning 1919 Machine Gun from a moving WWII Halftrack. This guaranteed him a spot in the final four as the other four players had to first compete to see which three players would go to the elimination challenge and then those three had to compete in a game of “Horse” with guns to see who would be sent home.
The finale of Top Shot All Stars airs tonight at 10 p.m. (9 Central). Tune in to see if Morden takes home the championship and the grand prize of $100,000 and a speedboat.
