By now, many people have read or heard about the alleged racial incident at Charleston, South Carolina’s Wild Wings Café which has received the attention of civil rights activists, according to USA Today on Tuesday. As the headlined-story goes, a group of 25 African-Americans were asked to leave the eatery because a white customer said the group made them feel uncomfortable. Michael Brown – also known as Michael London – a member of the ejected group said – via a Facebook post – that after waiting patiently, they were told they had to leave.
After the racial story went viral and the criticism built up to a media-frenzy, the restaurant chain offered an apology to the group and a free meal.
Now comes another side of the story from a woman who works at the Wild Wings who claims the group was asked to leave the restaurant for several valid reasons. The female employee of the restaurant where the incident occurred contacted Radio Facts and said there is definitely another side to the story that isn’t being voiced. She insists that the media’s version of the story is quite inaccurate.
The employee said that the large group of patrons who claimed to be treated racially unjust was complaining about the long wait they had to be seated at the restaurant. They were talking about how “whitey” was being seated, but they still had to wait.
The employee went on to explain that the problem was that the large groups insisted on being seated together – next to one another – and the facility only had one section that could accommodate a group that large. The patrons eating in that section weren’t finished, so the large party had to wait until the other patrons who were already there had to finish their meal. When they complained that white people were being seated before they were being accommodated, she agreed that that was indeed the case because they were being seated in different areas. The section for their large party was being cleared – slowly but surely.
The employee said that the group turned the incident into a racial issue. Specific actions, according to the employee, included one of the people in the group telling a deaf white girl to move – and when she didn’t respond due to hear handicap, she was insulted. Additionally – again, according to the employee – the group was asked to move over so that customers could exit the restaurant via the walk-way as it was difficult for customers to leave the restaurant. The staff who asked them to move over was told that they could stand wherever they wanted to stand, and they told the staff that if they wanted them out of the way they should just seat them.
The employee said that the customer who complained about being offended said that he was offended by a person’s constant use of the “n” word. When a staff member asked the person to stop using the word, he allegedly went on a rant in which he let out a verbal “long string of racial epithets” against the employee.
Naturally, it would be best if the walk way at the Wild Wings Café Restaurant where all of this allegedly occurred had a video – with audio capability – because it is apparently the only way the media will find out which side of the story is more accurate. It would be great if the total truth of the story came out fast, too, as the racial story doesn’t appear to be going away any time soon as it now stands.
A female speaking on WVON-AM radio on Sunday night said that African-Americans should go to restaurants and complain about white customers being intimidating – just as the white customer complained about the African-American at the Wild Wings Café in Charleston. Ironically, this story of racial divide has blown up the week that the nation is celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech and the March on Washington.
