The Drive Erazer Ultra from WiebeTech, is similar in appearance to their UltraDock V5 which was the topic of a recent review. Both devices are capable of providing valuable information about a hard drive but the Drive Erazer Ultra goes a giant leap further in providing the means to completely erase and sanitize your SATA and 3.5″ IDE/PATA hard drives to DOD specifications.
What’s in the Box
- Drive Erazer Ultra Unit – Includes connections for SATA and IDE/PATA desktop sized drives. Connecting a 2.5″ IDE/PATA laptop drive, cameras and other types of drive would require additional adapters. Simple user interface for settings and navigation. Displays data, settings and status information on the LCD display on the unit. A recessed power switch prevents accidental turn off.
- Optional Label Printing – Includes a DB9 null-modem serial connection for attaching the Drive Erazer to a compatible label printer. Allows you to print a label with a record of the details of an erase process for a particular drive.
- Cables – 40 pin hard drive cable for attaching an IDE/PATA hard drive.
- SATA hard drive adapter cable with 4 pin power adapter connection.
- Standard flat 4 pin Molex power adapter to 4 pin square power adapter
- Protective metal plate, screws and rubber pads for protecting the back of your 3.5″ hard drive before attaching it to the Drive Erazer Ultra. This is optional.
- Power adapter
- Drive Erazer Ultra Quick Start Guide – Printed guide for connecting your hard drive and using the Drive Erazer Ultra for the first time. A full User Manual is available for download from Wiebetech online.
At this point you’re probably asking yourself “Why would I need the Drive Erazer Ultra?” Think about all the information that is stored on that old hard drive. A typical hard drive would contain credit card information, bank account numbers, passwords and login information as well as contact information and your entire address book as well as financial data and all those family photos plus a whole lot more that you wouldn’t want in the wrong hands.
Now you’re saying, “But I deleted all that and formatted the hard drive.” Sadly, that’s not enough to protect you. Deleting a file does not remove it from the hard drive. Reformatting the drive does not erase that data from the drive either. Someone with the will and the means would find it pretty easy to recover all the details of your life from your old hard drive. Of course, you could take a sledge hammer to the drive but that’s pretty drastic. The Drive Erazer Ultra is much easier and the drive will still be usable after the erase process instead of sitting in a landfill somewhere.
The Drive Erazer Ultra offers more than 10 levels of erase methods including the DOD spec erase methods and other methods for Canada, Great Britain and Australia. It also supports Secure Erase which is a feature incorporated in many new hard drives which Drive Erazer can activate at the hardware level.
Preset Erase Methods
QUICK ERASE – Performs single pass writing all zeroes
CUSTOM ERASE – Performs 1 to 99 passes (user-selectable), overwriting with zeroes or a user-selected pattern
SECURE ERASE N – Initiates the drive’s built-in Secure Erase (Normal) function
SECURE ERASE E – Initiates the drive’s built-in Secure Erase (Enhanced) function
DOD CLEAR – US Department of Defense “Clear” standard
DOD SANITIZE – US Department of Defense “Sanitize” standard
NIST80088 CLEAR – Clear” standard defined by NIST special publication 800-88
NIST80088 PURGE – Purge” standard defined by NIST special publication 800-88
CSEC ITSG-06 – Canadian data sanitization standard
HMGIS5 BASELINE – Great Britain’s “Baseline” drive erasure standard
HMGIS5 ENHANCED – Great Britain’s “Enhanced” drive erasure standard
DSD ISM 6.2.92 – Australian government’s data sanitization standard
Drive Erazer Ultra functions without a computer but you have the option to use it as a USB drive dock to view the drive on your computer and confirm the completion of the erase process. The USB port looks like a USB 3.0 port but the chip onboard functions only in USB 2.0 mode.
Erasing the contents of a 500 GB hard drive with the Drive Erazer Ultra was easy to setup using the 4 button interface on the front of the unit. Since this was a new hard drive with none of the above sensitive files on it, I selected the Quick Erase method for my test. After assessing the drive, the display showed an estimated erase time of 4 hours and 26 minutes. The completion time was actually 4 hours and 46 minutes which may seem like a long time but it included the verification step which I was expecting to take far longer.
The Drive Erazer Ultra from Wiebetech, a brand of CRU, is a fast and easy to use multi-function device that will completely remove all data from a hard drive and leave it still usable for future use or donation. The design is small and lightweight, with an aluminum shell that effectively dissipates heat. This is the ultimate tool for a tech on the go.
It’s available on Amazon at prices starting at around $200. Visit Wiebetech online to find out more about Drive Erazer Ultra and other online resellers or a retail location near you.
