The extreme fundamentalist Westboro Baptist Church may have taken on the one guy unafraid to meet them head-on and match their vitriol with an an equal helping of undisguised contempt — country singer and “The Voice” mentor Blake Shelton. When the “God Hates Fags” holy-rollers decided to go after Shelton, announcing they would picket one of his upcoming shows in Kansas City, he took to Twitter to tell them exactly what he thought of their judgmentalism and hate-driven brand of religion.
Huffington Post reported Sept. 26 that Westboro Baptist Church has been flooding their Twitter account with anti-Blake Shelton condemnation, often accompanied by the line: “We know BS when we see it!”
The hate-ranting sect that became famous for picketing the funerals of dead American soldiers and celebrities with whom they found fault decided they would picket Shelton’s upcoming Oct. 3 show in Kansas City.
Shelton was unfazed by the attack and/or threat. He took to Twitter with his reply. And in typical Blake Shelton fashion, it was pure B. S. without any sugar-coating (or verbal “b. s.,” as it were).
“Hey WBC.. I’ve got one more sin for ya… Blow me,” he wrote.
He followed that with: “Hey @WBCSays.. This isn’t about God. It’s about me using this opportunity to make y’all look like the absolute complete dipshits you are.”
Looks like the challenge has been answered.
Shelton rose to fame on the back of a number of country music hit songs beginning in 2001 with the song “Austin,” which became his first No. 1 country Billboard hit. A dozen more were added over the years, according to Billboard records, along with eight studio albums and two studio extended play releases, all Top 10 offerings. But his brand soared when he was cast as a judge and mentor for the NBC reality singing competition “The Voice.” Known for his folksy honesty and his take-no-prisoners delivery, he has become an integral part of what makes the show a hit.
You might think it is his “bromance” with fellow judge Adam Levine, where he is often seen and heard flirting with Levine in a man-crush sort of way, that attracts viewers and repels the overly judgmental members of the Westboro Baptist Church, which, over the years, has made its position on homosexuality more than abundantly clear. For those not familiar with the fundamentalist sect, an inkling as to their position on homosexuality can be found in the name of their website, GodHatesFags.com.
However, they actually went after Shelton for his marriage to Miranda Lambert, calling her a whore and chastising Shelton as an adulterer. The church, via their announcement, said that Shelton was one of “these sissy-men who fill up the airwaves with their whoring ways.” The sect also reasons that Shelton’s “ways” are why “fags think it is OK to marry.”
Now it would appear that they’ve got Blake Shelton’s attention. And there’s something about Shelton that makes one pretty sure that he might do a little more than simply verbalize his feelings when it comes to people like those at Westboro. You know, like perhaps putting one of those big ole cowboy boots up some sign-carrying extremist’s behind.
We shall see as this story develops…
