Remember that song – ‘Whistle while you work?’ Does that describe your mood at work these days or are you waiting for ‘one day’ or ‘someday’ when you finally find your perfect job? Agreed we all want that coveted dream job, but in the current economic conditions won’t it be more prudent to take steps to rekindle your love for your current job rather than toppling the apple cart completely?
Here are some tips to turn your current job into your dream job:
Seek a new challenge: Often the monotony of everyday tasks sets in and makes you feel like you’re stuck in a rut. Try to take up a project or an assignment that’s completely different from anything you’ve done in the past. Not only will it enhance your skills and learning but the euphoria from having completed a challenge successfully will motivate you at your current job for a long time.
Enhance your skills: Learning something new is both personally and professionally fulfilling. Take up a course, learn a new language or maybe take swimming lessons. Teach yourself a new skill and see the doors open. Today, there are lots of free online courses available, many from some of the finest universities across the world. Check out sites like Coursera which also have options of a signature track where you can get a verified certificate on the successful completion of a course. So go on sign up for that finance or marketing course you always wanted to do. Keeping yourself professionally updated will be an advantage always, for the current job as well as that promotion you aspire to get.
Identify opportunities for change: Look for processes or system improvements in the organization or your team and volunteer to work on those. However before you volunteer for extra work or more challenging assignments make sure you are doing your current job well enough for your manager to give you extra responsibility.
Focus on that promotion: Sure you aspire for the next level in the organization. Focus on getting there. Seek feedback from your managers, team and peers on what you can do better to reach the next level faster and work towards making it happen.
Make work fun: This helps in understanding your colleagues better and lightens the work atmosphere. After all you spend a large portion of the day in each others’ company, so having a cordial relationship and more positivity will make work more enjoyable. Plus it may help to promote healthy competition amongst peers giving you more motivation to strive for a good performance.
Try these small changes and see the difference it makes!
