Here’s how Verizon and Motorola’s Droid Maxx stacks up in our hands-on comparison to Apple’s iPhone 5, completed Aug. 28, 2013. For another view, check ZDNet.com’s review dated Aug. 28. Droid Maxx showed up last week in Verizon Wireless stores and Verizon.com.
This Motorola-built phone is very similar to the Moto X from AT&T. Droid Maxx offers amazingly long battery life for a phone comparable in size and weight to most other smartphones. It also has a very fast processor and a 5-inch screen, slightly larger than the iPhone screens. Though iPhone 5 is Apple’s latest version of the world’s best selling smartphone right now, Apple will announce newer iPhones on September 20.
Battery life: Droid Maxx has amazing battery life for its size and weight. With light use during the demo, the battery lasted more than 3 days. Verizon rates this battery 3500 mAh delivering up to 48 hours use, or up to 25 days on standby. The iPhone 5 battery supports up to 10 hours internet use and up to 225 hours on standby.
Price: Droid Maxx costs $299.99 with a new 2-year service commitment from Verizon. Without the two year commitment Droid Maxx’s fullretail price is $649.99. The lower $299.99 price comes with an early termination fee of $350. Monthly access for Droid Maxx or any other smartphone on the Verizon Share Everything plan costs $40. Shipping is free if the Droid Maxx is ordered from Verizon.com. A comparable iPhone 5 with 32 gigabytes of memory also retails at $299 with a new 2-year commitment and is currently discounted by at least $50 at most outlets as newer model iPhones are expected to debut in September.
