For Utahns in the NFL the San Diego Chargers were the big winners in Week 4, as former Utah star Eric Weddle had four tackles and ex-Notre Dame standout Manti Teo had three to help lead the Chargers to a big 30-21 win over Dallas.
Lest you think those were the only Chargers from Utah who stood out, you were wrong.
Former Utah QB and now-Chargers head coach Mike McCoy is leading a renaissance of sorts for quarterback Philip Rivers — who is playing his best ball in years.
Former Utes, such as offensive lineman Zane Beadles and quarterback Alex Smith, also continued their winning ways.
Here’s how they did in Week 4 of the NFL:
Eric Weddle – Safety – San Diego Chargers (Utah) / Manti Teo – Linebacker (Notre Dame)
San Diego is looking like it might be a factor in a newly loaded AFC West division.
You know all about Alex Smith and the Kansas City Chiefs, as well as Zane Beadles protecting Peyton’s backside in Denver, but would you believe the biggest concentration of former Utahns in the NFL is on the Chargers?
Safety Eric Weddle is a Chargers captain and continued having another great season today in a 30-21 win over the Dallas Cowboys.
Manti Teo (pictured) is well known just about everywhere and so far has had a quiet season, but the former Notre Dame star made some nice plays today, getting three tackles in San Diego’s win.
Zane Beadles – Offensive Line – Denver Broncos (Utah)
Beadles main job is to protect Peyton Manning’s backside and so far, he’s done a great job doing it.
The competition is tough among Utahns In The NFL; you’ve got to bring it every week but Beadles is back on the list for the second time.
Today, the Broncos scored 52 points on a high-powered Philadelphia Eagles team, and Denver has scored an average of 45 points in four games this season.
Beadles and his O-line allowed just one sack on Manning today.
For the year, Manning has only been sacked five times — in large part to Beadles (pictured) and the other Broncos doing their jobs.
Alex Smith – Quarterback – Kansas City Chiefs (Utah)
Smith is also back on the list. At this point he may never go off of it, provided he continues to roll up victories — though this one almost got away from him and the Kansas City Chiefs early.
Two uncharacteristic interceptions would have frazzled most quarterbacks but not Smith.
The former No. 1 pick out of Utah rolled up his sleeves, running the offense as Andy Reid has directed and the Chiefs changed their course in the second half.
Smith went 24-of-41 for 288 yards and three touchdowns — even with those two early picks, and Kansas City remained unbeaten through four weeks winning 31-7 over the New York Giants.
With the big showdown looming between Smith’s Chiefs and Beadles’ Broncos in just a few weeks, things are about to heat up between Utahns In The NFL.
