This past Saturday, the Four Dames … four inspirational speakers, each with an expertise in the four domains of life — health, wealth, love, purpose … came to the Queen Mary in Long Beach to help women recognize, honor and unleash the “queen” that resides inside.
Through a variety of workshops, coaching and spa retreats, the Four Dames “help empower women where ever on their path they may be,” said Julie Jones Hamilton, the Dame on the Domain of Love.
Although each have their own successful business, these four women have come together to create The Four Dames to help more people. “Individually, we shine our light,” said Hamilton. “But together, its like a battery pack shining a bigger light.”
Saturday’s event, “Inside Every Woman Is a Queen,” was the first time the Dames have come to Long Beach since incorporating in July 2012. The day was developed as an experiential workshop and retreat, held in one of the lovely ballrooms aboard the Queen Mary and including a light breakfast and nice luncheon of chicken and salmon. The details were pulled together to help make each attendee feel loved, honored and queen-like. They wanted the women who attended to “feel fabulously loved, that someone cared about them,” said Lynn Kitchen, the Dame on the Domain of Purpose.
The main message of the day was “What would you love?” Each participant asked herself that question, shared her dream with another and then wrote it down to help solidify it.
Even better, the Dames shared a “Dream Test” to encourage the women to dream bigger.
The purpose of the event was to create a “pinpoint shift from within that changes everything,” Hamilton said. That single shift can change the trajectory of one’s life.
The Four Dames are Patricia Barnett, the Dame on health; Marilyn Macha, the Dame on Wealth; Hamilton, the Dame on Love; and Kitchen, the Dame on purpose.
Much of her life, Barnett was not the healthiest. But it was facing a life-threatening disease, that finally made her decide to become a thriver and develop the mindset of a champion when it came to her health. Today she is vibrantly alive and healthy. She believes that “health is our first wealth,” for without it we have nothing else. At the event, she shared that “a good life is the enemy of the great life,” and that “the quality of our life is determined by the quality of the questions we ask.
Macha approaches wealth from its original, old English meaning of “well being. A certified financial planner, investment advisor and life underwriter, she knows a thing or two about money and wealth. But she believes she didn’t truly thrive in this domain until she gained the understanding of wealth’s original meaning. “Well being comes from within,” she says. Therefore you need to approach wealth in the same way. To many, wealth means freedom, and “freedom means living a life you love living.”
Hamilton grew up “seeking approval from others,” she said. But she found she either didn’t get the approval she was seeking or what she got was never enough. After facing a life-threatening disease, she decided to build a loving relationship with herself first. She found that loving yourself “opens up a space to allow the love to come.” She believes that “there is no limit to the love you can give,” especially when you love yourself first.
Kitchen, who happens to be a graduate of California State University Long Beach, believes we can all live legendary lives, lives of freedom, passion and joy giving our unique gifts to the world. She shared that one way to break free from the “have to do” list way of living, we need to transform it into a “love to do” list. “When we are loving what we’re doing, we are on purpose.” During the event, she discussed the upward spiral of life, how life is constantly calling us to grow and improve.
Overall the event was inspiring. The message was worthwhile. The exercises were useful. The food was delicious. The event space was luxurious. The only thing keeping this review rating at four instead of five stars is, the close was a bit abrupt, leaving this reviewer feeling like something was missing.
