A Company Man
A melodramatic synthesis of the hitman mafia film and existential angst. When Hyeong-Do, a company contractor who “fires” those that the higher-ups deem unsuitable for further work, is tasked with disposing of a man by the name of Hyun-Yi, he finds himself at a crossroads after inadvertently meeting the latter’s family and being racked with an emotion heretofore unknown to him: guilt.
A group of friends get together for a murder mystery dinner party, but all’s not fun and games. When one member of the group decides to take the opportunity to force the others into revealing long-forgotten secrets, secrets that some decide are worth killing to keep just that, things begin to take a turn for the worse. Eclipse Series 39: Early Fassbinder, Criterion Collection
An auteur. A rebel. A visionary. Rainer Werner Fassbinder never enjoyed “playing by the rules”, an edict never more obviously stated than after one has viewed the man’s repertoire of off-the-wall arthouse productions, collected here by the Criterion Collection. Five of these films, ranging from commentaries on American crime cinema to critical indictments against his homeland for their xenophobic tenacity, are now readily available for home viewing.
The English Teacher
Class is in session, and we have a new student. Such is the case in this hilarious film about a failed playwright who makes his way back to Hometown, USA, and to his English teacher who inspired him to get into the theater business. As the two begin work on producing the student’s best play yet, things get complicated when pupil and teacher start an affair.
Free Angela and All Political Prisoners
A documentary which chronicles the life of a young female professor, notably her tenure on the FBI’s 10 Most Wanted list after a failed kidnapping attempt implicates her in the death of four others. A political activist, Angela and her cohorts are shown in a sympathetic light by the filmmakers: a people who are deemed as part-collateral damage, part-scape goat, in a plea to clear the air.
The Great Gatsby
Well, hello there, Old Sport! Be a part of the latest thing “in” and check out Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald classic. A story about lust, love, greed, and madness, Nick Carraway, a Midwesterner and war veteran, is lured in the lavish lifestyle of his mysterious neighbor, Jay Gatsby. A romanticized tragedy, the film attempts to define the demarcating line whereby we all stand on the periphery of passionate obsession, or just obsolescent longing.
Hanging for Django
Two bounty hunters team up in an effort to stop the evil, illegal immigrant-trafficking Mr. Fargo and his band of renegades. Using familiar spaghetti western tropes and combining them with hard-edged imagery, a so-cheesy-it’s-fun soundtrack, and one character’s seven-barrel machine gun, this film is sure to be an enjoyable experience, even if it’s muddled in a purgatory-like timelessness.
Halloween is a time for candy, mischief, and haunted houses. Concerning the latter, although we may have all been through a haunted house or two in our lifetime, little thought goes toward the people behind the…er, magic. ‘Monsters Wanted’ is the story about a man who gives up a lucrative job in favor of pursuing a lifelong dream, creating a “Scream Park”, and all the trials, tribulation, and fears that come out of this life-changing journey.
Comprised of four individuals, unit 7 is the city’s most efficient drug-trafficking clean-up crew, using lies, half-truths, violence, and coercion to get the job done. But when the team’s two “leaders” find themselves at a crossroads facing in opposite directions—one towards a life steeped further in corruption, the other towards enlightenment with the help of a beautiful woman—the team’s biggest challenge may yet lie within.
