2 Peter 3:8
But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
So often, especially at funerals, we have heard a preacher admonish an audience to do the will of GOD (to obey HIS commandments) while the blood runs warm in our veins in order for us to reach our eternal home which is HEAVEN.
We have also heard that it doesn’t matter as much about our birth OR our death, but it’s the dash in between (for example 1948 – 2013). It is what we have done with our time between 1948 and 2013. And during this time, it seems almost like an eternity to us. Good things happen in our lives, but also BAD things occur and decisions have to be made for the good and the bad times. Are we making wise decisions, or poor decisions? Whatever we do, it can and will affect the direction in which our lives will take for eternity.
That’s why it is very important for us to DO the WILL of GOD during our lives. Read His words; follow His commandments and not our own selfish inclinations that can lead to eternal damnation.
The writer “Peter” who was a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ (2Peter 1:1) wanted the reader to be stirred to remember God’s words, His Will and His Way. He wanted them to continue to be holy as God is holy.
1 Peter 1:15 states:
But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; (KJV)
But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do;(NIV)
We must understand in all that we do, God is not on our timetable. He created us, we are on His schedule. It may seem as an eternity in our life time but it is a blink of an eye to our God who is eternal. God created time for us to have purpose, to measure space and time so that we could correct our steps.
Remember those Good and Bad choices were not always according to God’s will. And if we discover that we have fallen short of His will, we can make a change, we can repent, we can DO BETTER.
2 Peter 3: 12-18
Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?
Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.
Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.
And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you;
As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.
Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.
But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.
