During the season break several months passed for the group. Rick (Andrew Lincoln) started planting crops and Hershel (Scott Wilson) helped teach him how to do it properly. Maggie (Lauren Cohan) had a pregnancy scare, Beth (Emily Kinney) has matured and seems a bit harder and there is now a council instead of just one person being the leader. Surprisingly, Carl (Chandler Riggs) has returned to his old self, which is the opposite of what many fans were predicting.
However, the first episode wasn’t just about how lovely life is at the prison. There seems to be a mysterious illness that is affecting the animals. At the end, Patrick (Vincent Martella) contracted this illness and in that same day, it managed to kill him. He ended up turning into a walker and the rest of the residents have no idea.
When it comes to future episodes, Robert Kirkman said,
“It is escalating I guess to a certain extent, but that’s because as the characters move further and further away from civilization, they’re going to start encountering more and more dangerous people.”
He adds that it doesn’t happen by accident. Things are going to get harsher because it is a dangerous and violent world. It is important that the storyline remains believable or the viewers aren’t going to buy it. That means that a lot of people have to die. “The Walking Dead” creator explained that characters will have to die in horrific ways. He said,
“So it’s going to be pretty gruesome in some ways, but it’s always about character at its core. As long as we maintain the show’s humanity, I don’t feel that we lose our way. “
