Your soul is forever thirsty …
The woman said to him, ‘Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob? He gave us the well and drank from it himself … Jesus said to her, ‘Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again’ John 4:11-13 (ESV)
If we would run a contest for the most passionate and thirsty individual of the Old Testament, Jacob will make the top three.
Who else cheats his brother and father for destiny, works fourteen years for the woman he loves, wins a wrestle match with the Angel of the Lord and procreates the nation that delivers the Messiah?
Only one guy can brag about that…
The Samaritan woman praises the greatness of Jacob (the giver of the well). But according to Jesus, Jacob’s well fails to solve the ‘unquenchable thirst’ of our souls.
Jacob’s well is a picture of the waters of this world. It speaks of every natural pleasure and ‘painkiller’ for the soul ever invented. Be it the best of technology, entertainment, immorality, witchcraft, humanism and religion.
Whatsoever government, culture and devils may invent to capture the souls of men.
In short, the waters of this world cannot quench the profound thirst of the human heart. Quoting Jesus ‘whoever drinks of this water will thirst again’.
That was the case with Alex, a sincere believer from New York who has a history with broken wells and the waters of this world.
Most of Alex “wells” were not sinful (drugs, immorality and things like that). Actually, the water he was drinking had worthy labels like “Make Your Life Count” and “Be the Best you Can Be”.
But every single well—be it a religious, man created, or from the pit of hell—soon turned shallow, disappointing, polluted and broken.
Until Alex found true living water he watched his heart faint from thirst (for years), and the words of King Solomon became the blues of his soul: “everything is meaningless, completely meaningless” (Ec. 1:2 NLT).
What about you? What is the well you’re currently drinking from?
What makes you feel great, happy and successful? Which fountain is presently fueling your significance, establishing your ‘value’ and defining your identity?
