On September 4, on the new Fox Sports 1, the UFC’s The Ultimate Fighter will boldly go where no mixed martial arts reality television show has gone before. For the first time in the show’s history the opposing teams of aspiring UFC fighters will be coached by two female fighters. UFC woman’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey is set to coach opposite Miesha Tate. Also for the first time in Ultimate Fighter history both men and woman will be in the same house, training together and living together for the duration of the show.
This season’s Ultimate Fighter will feature sixteen women and sixteen men all fighting for a contract with the UFC. The opposing coaches will meet at UFC 168: Weidman vs Silva II on December 28 in Las Vegas, Nevada as Ronda Rousey will defend her UFC bantamweight title against top contender Miesha Tate. Rousey and Tate share an equal level of disdain for the other. Their rivalry began under the Strikeforce banner in 2012.
“Obviously the fierce rivalry between Ronda and Miesha is going to get everyone’s attention, but it doesn’t take away from their dedication and success as coaches and the level of talent this season. One of the things that always makes The Ultimate Fighter great is the fights, and this season continues to deliver. Dana White said in the official press release.
White went on to say, “Since we added the women’s division earlier this year, they’ve been putting on awesome fights, and the streak continues on the show, giving the men some serious competition and setting up some Fight-of-the-Night worthy battles.”
All the competitors on The Ultimate Fighter’s eighteenth edition will be fighting at bantamweight. The show also features fighters from all over the world including England, Japan, Canada, and Sweden.
The Ultimate Fighter: Team Rousey vs Team Tate will air Wednesdays at 9:00 p.m. central time on Fox Sports 1 and is set for a thirteen week run beginning on September 4 and culminating on November 30 with a special three hour finale at the Madalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
