The world is in danger. The Universe is in danger. Who can we call on to stop the on-coming attack or apocalypse? We got ourselves heroes. Heroes who can do so much with what little they have. We have heroes who will do the right thing, even if it many seem like the not legal thing. Anime is full of these heroes and these are just the Top 10 Heroes who have done amazing things in spite of outside interference.
They are men. They are women. They are heroes, one and all. But they are more than just heroes. This list is, of course, subjective to the criteria that I put them in. I am scaling these heroes based on characterizations, actions, reactions to the world and people around them, the impact of said hero and, of course, there over all belief in to doing the right thing. That being said … this list is BOUND to get some interesting comments. Still, sit back, read it over and enjoy.
10: Char Aznable
Yes. I am kicking this list off with controversy right away. Char Aznable, for part of his on screen existence, was considering the main antagonist to our hero in the original Mobile Suit Gundam, Amuro Ray. Yet, with a war that both sides had jerks and evil people, Char was decidedly not evil. He was driven. He was skilled. And he killed quite a bit of people … but so did Amuro. And all he was fighting for was for Earth to give freedom to the Colonies.
If you go into Gundam like that, you will clearly see that Char is not necessarily the bad guy. He’s just on a side you do not agree with. Yet, get gets to shine as he takes the name Quatro during Zeta Gundam and is one of the main protagonists during that show. Char does what he can to protect the colonies from the now malicious Titans. And he does so throughout the show. His aim has always been for the people of the colonies, especially Zeon, to rule themselves.
Unfortuately, Char’s Counterattack is why I had to put him on # 10. Destroying much of Earth with falling giant colonies is definitely not heroic. Still, Char, far more charismatic and enjoyable to many than Amuro, definitely leaves his mark.
# 9: Son Goku
Goku. Goku. Goku. This guy has done a lot. He defended the planet from evil so many times. He’s fought off aliens. He’s taken on his own family members. He’s even died and come back a few times (and he’s the not the first character on this countdown to do so.) Goku, with a smile on his face and a song in his heart, leaps into battle after battle …. after battle … after battle, defending Earth, Otherworld and more from all sorts of threats.
So, why, you ask, have I placed him in # 9 and not much higher. Oh. There are plenty of reasons. First, Goku is not the smartest guy out there. Sure. There are heroes with limited intelligence but honestly, Goku was not a fan of school and has no problem saying so. Second, Goku seems to enjoy fighting a whole lot … to the point where other things get neglected. Goku supposed to help Chichi? Nope. He’s off training. Goku’s supposed to spend time with Gohan or Goten? Nope. Training or fighting another enemy. And that’s what he’d rather do. Fight. And Finally, going hand and hand with the last reason I just posted, Goku …flat out … is a BAD husband and father.
Goku saves the world. Yes. Over and over he has. But, he has also neglected his wife and children on several occasions so he could train. Don’t believe me? When he came back on Earth for the first time since his battles on Namek, he specifically told everyone that he could have transported back instantly cause of his “Instant Transmission” and was gone for years. Why? So, he could train. Uubuu showed up, Goku decides to leave his family AGAIN to train the young boy … who is NOT either of his two sons. And THIS is the man many fans idolize? A deadbeat dad who just loves to fight … even at the sake of his kids?
I give it to Goku about saving the world but Vegeta and Piccolo are better fathers than Goku. And THAT’s saying something.
# 8: Yusuke Uremeshi
And here, we got our little badass delinquent hero. Yusuke starts out as Spirit Detective for Earth after he dies … yep. He dies first than becomes a hero. When he comes back, he has new powers and fights demons to protect humanity. And he does so over and over again. He also fights in tournaments, partially cause he was blackmailed into it. He encounters all sorts of demons and humans that he must fight to save the planet.
Yusuke starts out like an anti-hero but little by little, grows into his role. By the time the Chapter Black Saga begins, Yusuke is a confident detective, genius fighter and a good leader. He saves the world, his friends and more during the process. He even discovers his past and gets the first father figure in his like with Kaizen.
Why does this brash, foul-mouthed teen end up on this list? Quite simply … Yusuke is just Yusuke. While he does grow and mature in various ways, many of his core traits remain. He’s foul-mouthed. He doesn’t mind taking advantage of friends playfully. He’s not very kind to authority. And he, like Goku, disappeared for years. Unlike Goku though, he came back to be with the woman he loved and his friends. With 2 other demons and a powerful but hilarious sidekick, Yusuke leads his team to face off against the worst the universe has to offer. And that’s what makes him so epic and awesome.
# 7: Lina Inverse
Lina Inverse is a lot of things. She’s a sorceress. She’s a mercenary. She’s a fiery red head that seems to get into trouble a lot. She steals from thieves to keep to herself. She loves money; so, she’ll charge high prices in order to get the most money possible. She overeats. She sometimes tries to avoid trouble when it’s in front of her. So, why oh why is she on this list?
Actually, Lina is something of an anomaly. Even though she has all those traits, Lina is very loyal to her friends. Lina grows throughout the various Slayers series to be more helpful of people. And even when she’s greedy, other people end up being her concern if there is some kind of negative impact. Of course, all this happened over time. Oh … she summoned the creator of her universe in order to kill the highest level demon in existence.
… Yup ….
That’s why she’s on the list.
# 6: Jotaro Kujo
Jotaro is one of those heroes consider by many to be among the manliest of all time. And when you see him in action, you understand why. Jotaro is one of the most brutal fighters you will ever meet. But for his rough outside, Jotaro is very loyal and passionate; similar to Yusuke in that respect. Jotaro is always trying to be cool yet, he’s still a Joestar through and through.
Jotaro is considered a delinquent to some but overall, he has deep respect for his grandfather and mom. And while his attitude could use work, Jotaro is one of the first members of the Joestar family to use Stands. And those Stands help him defeat the nearly, unkillable and extremely powerful Dio.
Jotaro’s ranking on this countdown is based on his attitude and the fact that it took till his generation to actually KILL Dio once and for all. Yet, accomplishing that places him firmly on the middle of this countdown as an EPIC HERO!
# 5: Gon Freeces
I know. I know. How is this little boy cooler than Jotaro? That’s the thing. This boy is only 12 years old and has already the combat experience and the power of Jotaro on his own. Gon is a happy-go lucky hero who seemingly enjoys his childhood. He’s great with animals and pasted the examine to become a Hunter. Gon’s practiced with Nen, aura that can produce super powers, and fought against mercenaries, killers, pirates and even mutant ants.
Gon is extremely loyal to the people he cares about. Yet, that is part of the reason why he’s lower on this countdown. You see, if Gon doesn’t care about you, he really does not care what happens to you. And while that seemingly starts to change over time … it is overall if something is happening in front of him. Otherwise, Gon could care less.
Yet, Gon’s love for his friends and doing the right thing make him sit right in the middle of the countdown. He has stood for his convictions to the point where his life depended on it, as you see in the picture. Plus, in order to beat an enemy who was at least twice to three times as old and possibly more powerful, Gon sacrificed one hand and part of his other arm in order to beat them. Now that, that is epic.
# 4: Mikasa
People are probably dropping their mouths right now in surprise. Mikasa? Yes. Mikasa. From Attack on Titan. Mikasa is a world-class soldier. She is in a world where Titans, giant humans, are around her and people are dying … brutally. Homes are destroyed. People are being snapped in half, eaten or worse as the Titans attack the settlements that serve as protective grounds for humanity.
Mikasa’s love is none other than a guy named Eren, who is a human who can transform into a Titan to combat the others. Eren can regenerate as well from any wound. Eren’s lost limbs but still came back. Yet … it is Mikasa who earns her rank on this countdown and I will explain why.
Eren is a cry baby who is indecisive and somewhat selfish. Mikasa, the heroine that she is, tells Eren the truth but still loves him enough to be there for him. Moving through her own tragic past, Mikasa goes in hard in every single battle she has against the Titans.
She has no super powers. She has no real special weapons. Just her swords, her skills and her desire to help people and kill the Titans. She has the highest kill count, to my knowledge, of Titans to this day. She has taking blow after blow but come out alive each time. Mikasa puts up with the whining of not only Eren but some of the other characters on Attack on Titan and still does her job.
She is, by far, one of the best female characters anime has ever displayed. The fact that she loves Eren so much and puts up with him is also partially why she’s down at # 4 but Mikasa has proven herself a heroine in her own right.
# 3: Dragon Shiryu
Have you ever felt the power of the Cosmos? Shiryu surely has. The Dragon Shiryu is one of the Bronze Saints of Athena that has gone much farther than anyone expected. Shiryu is a student of former Gold Saint of Libra, Dohko, of the Twin Peaks. Shiryu has fought other Saints, God Warriors and even Gods to protect the planet and Athena.
Shiryu is very kinda but furious warrior. He loves his master and Shurei very deeply. Shiryu, though, has a tendency to always fight fair … in times where he shouldn’t. But that merely shows off his nobility.
Why is he on this countdown? The man took out his own eyes with is fingers to stop an enemy from using their Medusa shield from turning him to stone. Then he learned to fight using Cosmos while blind. He, later own, loses all 5 senses at some point, but still trains his son, Ryohu. THAT is pretty damn epic.
Why is he # 3? Cause Shiryu was fine being in the background to Seiya when there was times he should have taken the lead.
# 2: Kenshiro
It’s Kenshiro from Fist of the Northstar. This man has done things that few others have done. He has saved the world. He has battled enemies and killed them with one finger. He has used all sorts of techniques. And he has been driven by nobility and love. Kenshiro has made people’s head explode and has given people back their sight.
When Kenshiro cares about someone, it is long and deep. He’ll defend you with all his power. The near messiah-like abilities that Kenshiro displays balance out the sheer body count and number of people he has killed in order to save the day. In this post-apocalyptic world, Kenshiro has proven himself among the best. There is very little Kenshiro cannot do. And once you’ve angered him, you will hear him say “You are already dead” long before your head pops.
Why is he # 2? Honestly, it is cause he always seems to come too late to save some people. And … Kenshiro’s feats are overshadowed by our # 1.
# 1: Optimus Prime/Convoy
Before we get into an argument about Transformers being anime or not, it was co-created by Japanese animators and Takara; Transformers also originated as Diclone in Japan … G1 and the majority of the Transformers franchise IS anime. That being said … I give you the # 1 most epic hero.
Optimus Prime aka Convoy is the legendary leader of the Autobots. Optimus has battled the Decepticons/Destrons over and over and over again. Each campaign, Optimus lives and learns. He has a deep love for all sentient life and would rather peacefully solve things. Yet, when it comes to Megatron or Galvatron, Optimus Prime knows better. Optimus has save multiple galaxies, helped planets be freed, stopped an intergalactic plague and sacrificed himself for the Autobots over and over again. Optimus is noble, loyal and strong. His mere name gets people, both in the show and in real life, excited. Optimus has even died and come back … multiple times. And depending on the G1 continuity … it is more than even you first thing.
Nicknamed by fans as “Robo Jesus”, Optimus Prime carries a respect and a statue that few characters have. He has had more iterations than nearly any other anime character in history. Japan, America or other, Optimus Prime/Convoy is a name respected amongst not just anime fans, but all kinds of fans. He is truly what exemplifies this countdown,a noble hero with a list of labors that will make your head spin.
With all this, this is why Optimus Prime/Convoy is # 1.
