An emerging brand of rum that seeks to reflect the honest and forthright reputation of legendary prohibition-era rum runner Bill McCoy is making great strides with positive reviews while attracting world-class talent to its board of directors.
The Real McCoy rum brand, based in Mystic, Connecticut was featured in the recent U.K. Rum Festival where it garnered much attention from rum enthusiasts and journalists in London, including Simon Difford, publisher of Difford’s Guide For Discerning Drinkers. Among more than 200 rums on display at the event, Simon chose The Real McCoy as the best up and coming rum at the festival.
Difford’s Guide and his Class Magazine are considered two of the most prestigious publications in the European spirits industry.
Mr. Difford writes: “The one to watch is The Real McCoy, a blend of Bajan column and pot still rums, aged in ex-bourbon barrels which have been re-charred (No.7 char) and reassembled on the island. This rum’s name is inspired by Prohibition rum runner, Bill McCoy, whose rum, gin and whisky were said to be The Real McCoy due to their quality. I’ve given all three rums, 3-year-old, 5-year-old and 12-year-old, five stars.”
The Real McCoy has already won seven major awards in US spirits competitions during its first year of release.
In related news, the company this week announced a stellar lineup of members on its board of directors. Bailey Pryor, Founder, President & Chief Executive Officer, began his unconventional venture into the spirits industry in 2006 while producing a documentary film, currently running on PBS, about the life of the famous prohibition era Rum Runner, Captain Bill McCoy. The story of Bill McCoy inspired Pryor to create a rum that lives up to its name — The Real McCoy — being produced in the same unadulterated fashion, just as it was over 90 years ago.
