Twenty-four years after its theatrical release, “The Little Mermaid” is entering the 21st century as Disney releases the film for the first time on Blu-ray, the Diamond Edition, today. A beloved film of the era predating computer generated animation, “The Little Mermaid” is the masterwork of Ron Clements and John Musker, the first in a line of films that revived Walt Disney Pictures as the maker of childhood dreams.
Now in an era where the company no longer holds a monopoly on the imagination of youth, the Blu-ray release symbolizes a golden age of storytelling and fascination for the last generation to grow up before the dawn of digital entertainment.
To celebrate the release, Disney invited some its famous fans for a screening in New York City featuring the movie’s original talent Jodi Bensen (voice of Ariel) and Samuel Wright (voice of Sebastian). Among those in attendance were Bethenny Frankel (TV’s “Bethenny,” “The Real Housewives of NYC”), Amar’e Stoudemire (NY Knicks), Rebecca Minkoff (fashion designer), Amy Wang (CEO of Alexander Wang), Stacey Bendet (Alice + Olivia), Matt Walton (TV’s “One Life To Live”), and Marco Canora (Chef & contestant on TV’s “Next Iron Chef”).
With song classics that include “Kiss the Girl” and “Under the Sea,” it is pretty exciting to revisit the wonder of Disney on a format that proves to enhances the sites and sounds of the world as Ariel always imagined it.
