Central Park, New York City people are starting to repeat what they are saying. Bodies are falling off buildings but when you look up the people are walking off the edge at ease and with no remorse. They are falling to their deaths.
We next see Elliot Moore (Mark Wahlberg) and his friend Julian (John Leguizamo) both are of whom are teachers and confused about all that is happening trying to get a grip on what they can do. Elliot’s wife Alma (Zooey Deschanel) and Julian’s daughter Jess (Ashlyn Sanchez) have joined the men and are fleeing Philadelphia by train. On the train they are receiving conflicting reports about the catastrophe. Areas are being overrun with death as people are dying all over the place for no apparent reason. One thing they are hearing is that places up ahead, stops along the rail line, are being affected. They decide to get off and go through some of the smaller towns. They make it to a small diner and they see a report on the TV that the phenomenon is not a terrorist attack but could be of natural causes. In other words everybody is shooting for straws. Julian is upset that he has lost cell phone service and can’t get a hold of his wife up at Princeton. He leaves never to be seen again but he leaves his daughter with Elliot and Alma.
Elliot makes it almost to the state line when they see bodies on the road. They run into an army private who has stopped on the side of the road. More and More people start to pile up and they decide to move out on foot. As they are moving through the fields they notice that large groups seem to be the one’s getting killed. That smaller groups are being ignored by whatever ever is killing them. The idea of the plants letting off toxins against people starts to be talked about. No one really knows what is making people suicidal.
Elliot breaks off from the pack. He runs into an area where he looks for food. He eventually stops at a house where he can see people inside. The voice from inside the door tells them to go away but Elliot tries to reason with the people but they shoot and kill two of the people with Elliot that had left the pack with them.
Elliot, Alma, and Jess finally stop at Mrs. Jones’ (Betty Buckley) house. She is a quirky old woman even when things are going good. It is here I think you should watch the rest of the movie. It is here that you really want to see and not be told.
Director M. Night Shyamalan keeps the suspense up with out getting to gruesome. The story line is scary in that what if this could happen in real life. Who is to say that mother nature takes things in her own hands to cleanse itself of the infestation called man. Mother nature can be pretty deadly when she wants to be. So be nice to the old girl and enjoy the movie.
