Do you struggle with death and its sting?
If you want to get a grasp of death then first we must fathom “what life is!” Even some of the world’s greatest thinkers such as Aristotle, Plato and Socrates have bent over backwards trying to figure this out and provide some answers. Honestly, only the one who brought life into existence in the first place can accumulate the definite answers. Therefore, we have to look at the very beginning of life in order to discern it.
Religion, science and even philosophy accede that physical life had a beginning. Many believe that life maturated over the millennia. However, the Bible declares a God who fearlessly claims that He is the Creator of all life and that He created human life for a tremendous purpose. Through His word, God gives us His answers to life’s important questions. According to His word, other forms of life exist but to serve man in his fulfillment of a greater purpose, but man has an extraordinary God-given purpose for his existence.
Humans are exclusive among God’s physical creation in their god-like abilities to make decisions, plans and create. Rather than providing us with animal-like instinct, God created us with intellect, self awareness, the capacity to learn, reason, communication and produce. The Bible reveals that the difference between the human mind and the animal brain is the spiritual essence God included in humans. “For what man knows the things of a man except by the spirit of the man which is in him?” (1 Corinthians 2:11).
In Genesis 2:7 when God breathed the “breath of life” into Adam, He gave the first human being more than physical existence. God to Adam that spiritual and intellectual essence that gives mankind the remarkable capacities of the human kind. But did you know that even with all this greatness, the apostle Paul had still declared that something was missing? But what? In 1 Corinthians 2:11 it states, “so also no one comprehends what is truly God’s except by the spirit of God.” (New Revised Standard Version). It is here that Paul is speaking of another spirit, the spirit of God. He then continues, “now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the spirit that is from God, so that we may understand the gifts bestowed on us by God.” (verse 12).
Spiritual understanding that exceeds and go beyond our normal human intellect comes only through the extra help, influence, and power of the Holy Spirit. Paul says that, “those who are unspiritual, do not receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit.” However, he plainly and clearly explains why and basically he claims that “they are foolishness to them, and they are unable to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. (Verse 14, New Revised Standard Version).
God is the Creator and sustainer of life. He created human life on a different level from animals and plants to fulfill a far greater purpose. Our lives inhere to relationships, goals and experiences which can be at times enjoyable but also difficult. But the ultimate purpose is far more than just that.
