Do you want to work 40 hours a week? Do you know that you can look for work that is not permanent full-time work, but still provides 40 hours of compensation? During this time of economic strain, many employers are searching for temporary (sometimes also called contract) workers; so if you’ve been having challenges finding a permanent position, consider applying as a temporary, either through an agency or on your own.
Employers want flexibility from the people they hire. Yes, this means that job security is not as reliable as might be desired, but as employers become more savvy in the way they manage their work force, they have been putting a larger percentage of temporary and contract workers on the job. Many employees have very specialized skills which are often required for specific jobs, but are not necessarily those which the business needs on an ongoing basis. Temporary workers provide the essential support on projects with certain end-dates, allowing employers to control costs and manage results more efficiently.
Keep in mind that temporary work is not the same as part-time work. Most temporary or contract workers are on the job eight (or even more!) hours a day; and assignments can be of any length from a week or so to more than a year to an unspecified duration of time. If you are employed by a contracting or staffing firm, there is also an excellent chance that you might be eligible for the same type of benefits paid by employers to their full-time permanent workers. Medical insurance, 401k plans, and vacation time are popular offerings with which temporary firms attract top workers with top skills.
Aside from skill-building and references to be gained by being in the market, an additional perk of being a temporary or consultant employee is the flexibility offered: as a temp one has the option to work on an assignment and then take time off if required or wanted, before signing on for a new position or taking on permanent work. Think of it: work with new technologies and people, find stimulating environments with every new job, pick and choose how you will spend part of your working career – and earn benefits at the same time!
Lastly, many temporary and contract workers are ultimately offered permanent work by employers who have been pleased with on-the-job performance. Keep that in mind as you schmooze with your co-workers!
