John McCain and John Boehner should be looking over their shoulders because the end of their long- held power may be coming to an end. Their pretense of being Conservative is being challenged by activists who don’t want a third party but instead are working toward taking over control of the Republican Party.
Followers of Senator Ted Cruz believe that the Grand Old Party (GOP) is kaput—old, broken, done for—and they are planning to restore the former glory it had under President Ronald Reagan.
No matter how intently the main stream media berates Cruz the tea-party Republicans supported him with 74 percent as he worked to defund Obamacare. While the old RINOS mouth Conservative platitudes while huddling in conference with both Democrat and Republican liberals, Cruz did exactly what he promised to do when running for office in Texas.
According to the National Journal Cruz dominated the recent Values Voter straw poll held during October 2013. It appears that he has already secured the activists base that Marco Rubio, Rand Paul and Bobby Jindal are courting.
Conservative activists believe that the Republican Party is as corrupt as the Democrats. They made their distain known by staying home during the last two presidential elections. As far as they were concerned McCain and Romney were cut from the same liberal cloth.
Remembering the Ross Perot third party debacle of years ago Cruz and his followers have no plans to travel that route. What they want is control of the Republican Party and think they have history on their side. They remind politicians that the Republican Party emerged from the Whigs that was destroyed over the question of allowing slavery to the territories. By the presidential election of 1856, the Whig Party was dead. The Republican Party replaced it.
There is little doubt that staunch Conservatives are fed up with the establishment GOP and don’t plan to sit on their hands during the coming 2014 elections. Among those targeted for defeat are Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and Mississippi Senator Thad Cochran.
When Glenn Beck told his listeners and wrote to his readers that House Speaker John Boehner’s chief of staff had met behind closed doors with Senate Majority Leader to keep Congress’s Obamacare exemptions, it was the last straw.
Beck created the hashtag #DefundTheGOP that spread across Twitter and began a movement to encourage Republican donors to send donations to individual Conservatives instead of the National Republican organization. It was a message to the RHINOS that the gauntlet had been thrown down with the first intention being to dethrone Boehner.
With Cruz as their hero and leader will that be enough for Conservatives to take over the Republican Party? We may not find out until the 2014 elections.
