The question has come up from some friends about how to keep the healthy diet when going out to eat with friends. Of course, its easy to eat healthy at home since you have full control over the ingredients being used. With eating out, its a little bit more challenging but don’t let that deter you. You can still stay healthy and eat out with friends.
Recently, Los Angeles County launched a public health campaign for portion control. Restaurants are giving the option for the correct food portions one should eat instead of the feasts they call meals. Choose health LA is a list of restaurants that offer healthier normal portions or smaller portions along side the huge feasts they call a portion. One can go to the choose LA website and find a list of restaurants that offer the smaller better portions. Granted, the list is small but it should build up as more restaurants enroll in the program.
But you don’t have to wait for your favorite restaurant to offer the smaller portions, you can start doing it yourself. When you go out to eat you can ask the server to take half of your meal and put it in a to go bag, so you are less tempted to eat the huge portion at the table. You will eat half which is the correct portion you need and have the other half for lunch the next day or give it away to someone in need. Also, when looking over the menu pay attention to the way the food is cooked. If it is a fried food, ask if the chef will grill it instead, ask if they use butter for cooking. If it has a creamy sauce have it on the side so you can control how much of it you eat. Better yet stay away from any creamy dishes most likely it contains a bunch of fat which you don’t want. Pay attention to the beverages you drink, definitely stick with water or iced tea but with no flavors. If you want a flavored tea you need to ask if it is naturally infused or if they use a syrup to make the flavor. If they use a syrup stay away that drink will be at least 250+ calories.
Sometimes they fool you with a fish dish, usually fish is a healthier option instead of red meat, but ask how the fish is being cooked. Most likely it is being cooked in a butter sauce or some kind of creamy sauce, ask for the fish to be grilled and lightly use olive oil. It might seem like a pain but usually chef’s are willing to make the changes for the customer.
The best way to look at this, if you feel a bit apprehensive asking all those questions, you need to ask yourself one question, “Am I worth it? Am I worth the time and effort to be healthy?” The answer is always YES!! Yes you are worth putting forth the effort because you are awesome and there is no one else like you in the world! Love yourself and take the steps needed to keep yourself healthy.
