Baker’s Keyboard Lounge is a Detroit staple since 1939 and is known for featuring local talent as well as talent from around the world. Singer Peter Clements is a native Detroiter who retired from the city of Detroit’s Financial Administration in 2004. He now makes his home in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, but he makes a point of visiting the Motor City once a year.
Although not the featured performer, Peter was invited to take the stage briefly to sing an old Blues standard, “Stormy Monday”. It was clear by the enthusiastic turn out at Baker’s Keyboard Lounge that he still has a local following in his hometown. Those in attendance included his father, Nathaniel Clements, and family friend, Ann Marie Smith. The atmosphere was that of a welcome home party.
Peter Clements gave a stand-out performance which is not surprising since he is not a stranger to performing live on stage. If you are ever in St.Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands you may find him performing at some of the popular tourist attractions such as Golden Rail, Palms, and The Buccaneer. Some of what’s being said:
“Yes it IS the oldest Jazz club in the world- and you can feel it when you’re there. My first time to Bakers was a night I will never forget…”– Kristin G. Royal Oak, MI
“Baker’s is everything I expect in a Jazz club. Dark lighting, strong beverages, great history, a little seedy, good food, and a certain amount of unpredictability in that you never know who might show up to sit in with the scheduled performers…”– James B. Troy, MI
“Best damn chicken in the state! Went on Saturday with my lovely wife to be. The food is amazing, the jazz was great, but the drinks were pretty lackluster…” – Jason B. Oak Park, MI
“My husband and I went to Baker’s and had so much fun. We had made a reservation and had a great seat in a nice cozy booth right in front of the stage. The atmosphere was really cool; it was almost a step back in time…”– Jennifer H. Berkley, MI
