Simon Cowell has been making headlines and getting a huge public backlash for his adulterous affair with married New York socialite Lauren Silverman, who is now reportedly pregnant with Cowell’s first child. He has now retreated to France for a month-long vacation, according to tabloids such as the Daily Mirror and the Daily Mail. On Aug. 6, 2013, the Daily Mirror reported that Cowell is in crisis mode and has cancelled a scheduled on-camera meeting with “The X Factor” U.K. judges.
As previously reported, Cowell was set to meet with the four judges (Gary Barlow, Nicole Scherzinger, Sharon Osbourne and Louis Walsh) on a yacht in the south of France to tell them which contestant categories they will mentor this year. Instead, he cancelled the meeting (which was scheduled for Aug. 8, 2013) and will deliver the news by phone. Those phone calls will be filmed for the show, according to the Daily Mirror. Although Cowell has not been a judge on “The X Factor” U.K. since 2010, he is still an executive producer of the show, which is televised in the U.K. on ITV. Cowell is also a creator and co-owner of “The X Factor” franchise around the world.
An unnamed source told the Daily Mirror: “Simon has delayed the original date he was going to set sail on his boat and it is not going to work in his schedule now, so it has been cancelled. His problems and drama off screen are now starting to impact on his TV shows. He even called the U.K. judges personally to apologize for messing them around. ITV bosses are furious at the last-minute change. Simon’s return was going to be a big coup for them, but now that he’s just doing exactly the same as he did last year, it’s no big draw for the viewers. It’s really disappointing.”
The Daily Mirror reports that among Cowell’s close friends Sinitta, Kelly Bergantz, Ben Belldegrun (Bergantz’s husband) and Paul McKenna are among those who have joined him on his vacation in the south of France.
Cowell (who is 53 and says he never wants to get married) has not been seen with Lauren Silverman (who is 36) since the news broke on July 31, 2013, that she is pregnant with his child. Cowell was in Los Angeles that week for “X Factor” duties when the news broke. He then went to a One Direction concert in Las Vegas on Aug. 3, 2013, before he went to France. Silverman has been in New York, where she lives. Various paparazzi photos have shown her going shopping alone and with her son.
As previously reported, Lauren and Andrew Silverman (a real-estate mogul) are getting divorced. He filed for divorce in July 2013, citing “adultery,” with Cowell named as the person having an adulterous affair with Lauren. The divorce filing also says that that Lauren subjected Andrew to “cruel and inhumane” treatment. The Silvermans have a 7-year-old son named Adam. Andrew is seeking sole custody of Adam. Lauren reportedly moved out of their marital home in Manhattan in June 2013, and she is now living in nearby Bridgehampton, N.Y.
The Silvermans have known Cowell since 2003, and they were such close friends with Cowell that they frequently went on vacation with him, usually with Cowell’s ex-girlfriends Jackie St. Clair, Sinitta and Mezhgan Hussainy also invited on the trips. It has not yet been made public how long Cowell’s affair with Lauren had been going on before she got pregnant, but Us Weekly reported that she is due to give birth in February 2014.
According to the Sunday Mirror, Lauren Silverman has been telling friends: “I want to be Mrs Cowell.”
An unidentified source told the Sunday Mirror: “Lauren’s been saying that she wants him to get married to her and commit. But Simon is his own man and he’s got himself out of awkward spots before. He has a great connection with Lauren so knows they can make this work.
“Lauren wants to settle down with Simon. She says she wants to be Mrs Cowell, and wants to bring up their baby together. But for this he needs to leave his playboy lifestyle behind. Simon’s determined to do exactly the right thing, with the baby being the foremost priority. But he will not be prepared to give up his friends for anything.”
But by all indications, Lauren Silverman wants to be the No. 1 woman in Cowell’s life. It’s presumed that she will also financially benefit the most if she is proven to be the mother of Cowell’s child. It’s highly unlikely that Cowell will publicly admit or deny that he is the father of this child until a paternity test proves who the father is.
Meanwhile, Cowell is supposed to go back to work on “The X Factor” U.S. (where he is a judge on the show) in early September 2013 to help choose the acts that will go on to perform in the show’s live episodes. As previously reported, “The X Factor” U.S. has eliminated the “boot camp” and “judges’ houses” phase of the competition, which are usually filmed in July and August.
These changes had been in the works before Cowell got Lauren Silverman pregnant. However, the timing of Cowell’s month-long vacation in August is very convenient for him, as he avoids talking about this adultery scandal to the media. Earlier this month, Cowell, Lauren Silverman and Andrew Silverman issued separate statements that did not directly address the adultery and pregnancy, but essentially said that the situation was a “private” matter.
Cowell won’t be able to avoid the media for much longer though when he has to promote the third season of “The X Factor” U.S., which premieres in two parts on Fox on Sept. 11 and Sept. 12 2013. “The X Factor” U.S, which launched in 2011, has had a red-carpet premiere event during the week of each season premiere. Cowell and the other judges on the show attend this event, where they screen highlights from the season premiere and do a Q&A session afterward. It has not been announced yet if this “X Factor” U.S. premiere event is going to happen again in 2013.
