“Seeking post-college wrestlers. Ideally, you should be a former Olympic wrestler, World medalist, and/or past Midlands champion.”
No, it’s not an actual personals ad… but, if you meet the qualifications, the 2013 Ken Kraft Midlands Championships Selection Committee would like to hear from you.
In September, the Selection Committee for the Midlands – the annual post-Christmastime classic to be held at Northwestern University Dec. 29-30 — announced that it is conducting a nationwide search for the best 15 wrestlers who have completed their college career, and are more than ready to show those current college kids a thing or two.
The Committee is accepting applications from post-collegiate wrestlers now through Nov. 12, 2013. According to the announcement, “Those individuals who are past Olympians, World team members and Midlands champions will receive first consideration.”
Right from the start in 1963, the Midlands has built a rich tradition of welcoming post-collegiate wrestlers to compete for a prestigious Midlands title.
Former Northwestern head coach Tim Cysewski is a prime example.
As a wrestler, Cysewski won five Midlands titles… earning three of those titles after concluding his collegiate mat career.
“Every accomplished wrestler wants to add a Midlands title to their resume,” said Cysewski. “If you look into the history of Midlands, you will find that there were numerous Olympians and World medalists who not only won our tournament, but went on the win multiple NCAA titles. The Midlands Championship is a defining moment in a wrestler’s career.”
Current Northwestern head coach Drew Pariano added, “The Midlands will once again represent some of the best talent in the nation. We already have several world team members and past NCAA champions interested in competing at the 51st Ken Kraft Midlands. Restoring the tradition of having post-grads compete is a major focus of the event.”
This year’s Midlands will be held Sunday, Dec. 29 and Monday, Dec. 30 at Welsh-Ryan Arena (the famed venue where Larry Owings handed Dan Gable his only collegiate loss) on the Northwestern campus in Evanston, Ill. just outside Chicago. Tickets may be purchased online.
