Homelessness is an all-too-common problem plaguing the streets of downtown St. Petersburg. According to the Florida Council on Homelessness’s 2012 report, Pinellas and Hillsborough counties have more than 11,000 homeless people living on the street or in emergency housing.
Next month, local businesses, charities and athletes are teaming up to raise money for a program that facilitates families back into permanent, stable housing.
At 5 p.m. on Oct. 12, Gateway Radiology and St. Pete Sunrise Rotary Club are sponsoring the second annual Run Around the Pier 5K or 1M races. Runners can change up their usual scenery as they enjoy an evening run along St. Petersburg’s waterfront while raising support for St. Petersburg Free Clinic.
Because of partnerships with Gateway Radiology and St. Pete Sunrise Rotary Club, all of the money raised from race registration fees will benefit St. Petersburg Family Residence Free Clinic, which provides temporary assistance for families and individuals in need of the basics of food, shelter, health care, limited financial assistance and referral information.
The starting line is at Albert Whitted Park, located at 480 Bayshore Drive SE. The race will end with a celebration, including an expo with free food, beer and prizes. After the party, race participants can attend the Tampa Bay Rowdies soccer game across the street at discounted ticket prices.
Registration is currently available at http://beta.active.com/st-petersburg-fl/running/rotary-run-around-the-pi…. Registration fees are $25, with a guaranteed race shirt with early registration by Oct. 1. Participants can register the day of the race for $35.
Last year’s inaugural race saw over 400 participants raise more than $10,000 for the rotary club. This year, race organizers hope to see that number double. Recently, running has become a favorite activity for many people; more runners are expected for the second annual event.
