The Kansas City Renaissance Festival opens Saturday Aug. 31 at the festival grounds in Bonner Springs, Kan. The festival runs through Columbus Day, Oct. 14. The festival is open weekends and Labor Day from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Columbus Day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The opening weekend includes a Tattoo Competition, Best Beard Competition and a Fairy House Competition.
Santa Cali Gon 2013 begins on Thursday Aug. 29 with a carnival. This is the 41st year of the annual festival which runs through Labor Day. The carnival will run daily through the festival. Patrons can enjoy arts, crafts, vendors, food and drink. Free concerts begin on Friday with Delisa Dawn and Route 66 at 7:30 p.m., followed by Joe Diffie at 9 p.m. The concert series runs throughout the festival with the last show at 3 p.m. on Labor Day.
Other events Labor Day Weekend include: Irish Fest at Crown Center, Kansas City Wine Opener at Union Station, Sporting Kansas City vs. Colorado, The Kansas City Royals vs. Seattle and Bike 4 the Brian at the Johnson County Mental Health Center.

- Just Off Broadway: 3051 Central, “The Session” presented by Melting Pot KC, closes Sept. 8.
- Kansas City Repertory Theatre: Copaken Stage, “The Tallest Tree in the Forest”, closes Sept. 28.
- Slightly Off Broadway Theater: Excelsior Springs, Mo., “Laughter on the 23rd Floor”, closes Aug. 31.
Aftershock Bar and Grill
The Aftershock Bar and Grill is located at 5240 Merriam Dr. in Merriam, Kan. Friday Aug. 30 at the club features The Dreaming with Triplicity Guild at 7 p.m. On Saturday night the club features the End of Summer Mash-Up with Somewhere in Hiding, Rough Stomp, Molasar, Neurogenesis, It Never Happens and Airfield.
Davey’s Uptown Ramblers Club
Davey’s Uptown Ramblers Club is located just south of downtown at 3402 Main in Kansas City. Friday night the club will feature 2HI2DIE, A Plague in Faith, Beating Wooly Bully and Once Great Empire at 8:30 p.m. Saturday at 7:30 p.m. the club features Lucid Existence, Insomniac, Untamed, Lantern Hill Nightmare, No Safe Haven and Underwater Knife Fight.
Kellys Westport Inn
Kelly’s Westport Inn located at 500 Westport Road, in the Westport Entertainment District, will feature the Official After Party of KC Irish Fest at 10 p.m. with Flannigan’s Right Hook. At 10 p.m. on Saturday night the Magnetics take the stage. Kelly’s Westport Inn has an outdoor dining and drinking area located on the roof-top of the business.
The RecordBar is located at 1020 Westport Road in the Westport Entertainment District. On Friday night at 9 p.m. the club features Uzis, Labretta Suede & The Motel 6, Greg Davis of Blood On the Saddle. Saturday night at 10 p.m. the club features Bowinero with Jessica Hernandez and the Deltas, and David George & A Crooked Mile.
The Riot Room
The Riot Room is located at 4048 Broadway in the Westport Entertainment District. On Friday night at 8 p.m. the club will feature Maps For Travelers, Clairaudients, Bears and Company and Brandon Phillips of the Architects. Saturday at 8 p.m. on the patio shte club will present Klassic Hip Hop Series with Houston Zizza, The Real Chance Morris, LS, Landes, Dutch Newman, JP The City Native and Adrian Truth. On the main stage will appear Attic Wolves, Jack & the Bear and the Damon Bailey Trio.
Uptown Arts Bar
The Uptown Arts Bar is located at Valentine and Broadway near the Uptown Theater. The bar is a celebration of the performing arts in the Kansas City area. On Friday at 9 p.m. the bar features Juxtapose with DJ House and Techno with Todd Howard. Saturday from 7 to 9:30 p.m. the club will present “Art Saved My Life Screening and Film Festival Fundraiser”. At 10 p.m. Burlesque with a Day at the Beach with Sophie Sassafras.
