Forecast discussion: A strong high pressure system over the Carolinas will remain in place for the next few days. This high will help shift winds from the cool northwest to the warmer southwest. This will allow for some warmer air to move into Providence, and the rest of Southern New England, for the next few days.
Temperatures by midweek will be about 10 degrees above normal. I am expecting high temperatures to reach the lower 80’s across northern and central Rhode Island into Thursday. A weak cold front will bring a few rain showers by late Friday afternoon, but will end by early Saturday morning. A high pressure system will bring some sunshine for Saturday. However, we will return to some wet weather on Sunday.
Right now, the computer models are disagreeing on the timing of the cold front. The European model feels we will not see any rain until Sunday evening. The American and United Kingdom models believe we will see precipitation by the afternoon. For now, I will call it down the middle, seeing precipitation by the late afternoon. Precipitation will remain over Rhode Island going into Monday. Temperatures will return to seasonable conditions by Sunday, due to increased cloud cover and cooler air behind the front.
Meanwhile, the National Hurricane Center has started advisories on Tropical Storm Jerry. As of 5 p.m. EDT, Jerry was centered at 27.3N 44.9W, or about 1240 miles east of Bermuda. Maximum sustained winds were at 40 mph, and is moving east-northeast at 7 mph. Jerry will actually move towards the southwest before slowing turning to the west-northwest within 72 hours. Eventually, a cold front will pull the system to the north and northeast, and keep it away from land.
