Forecast discussion: Despite a weak high pressure ridge to our north, Providence did see more sunshine than clouds throughout the late morning and afternoon. As we head into Thursday, a change to northeast winds and a low pressure system offshore will give us more clouds than sun.
There is another low pressure system moving towards the coastline, passing through West Virginia this evening. However, a low pressure system hundreds of miles away from Southern New England will create northeast winds for this evening. This will help bring cooler air off the water towards the coastline. The warmer water temperatures will meet with the cooler air, helping to create some dense fog for this evening. A Dense Fog Advisory will be in effect until 9 a.m. Thursday. We may also see a passing shower during the afternoon inland, but temperatures will remain cool, as highs only reach the middle 70’s.
As we get ready to start the long holiday weekend, high pressure will build over the eastern U.S., allowing for partly to mostly sunny skies for Friday and Saturday. However, the second half of the Labor Day weekend does not look so good. A cold front now passing through western Canada will slowly make its way towards the Northeast U.S. We may see some off and on shower activity on Sunday, so it will not be a complete washout. The better chance for steadier shower activity will be on Labor Day, as the front moves closer to Southern New England. The front will pass through the region Monday night, providing us with showers into Tuesday morning.
We will finally return to sunshine for an entire day by next Wednesday, as the high comes down from eastern Canada. Also, the humidity will be coming down as well. I am expecting temperatures to be in the upper 70’s for most of next week with nights falling into the upper 50’s to lower 60’s by Monday night.
