The Philadelphia Flyers announced Thursday that they signed a one year, two-way deal with defenseman Brandon Manning. Manning had appeared in Flyers Orange for 10 games across the last two seasons, but his time since signing as an undrafted free agent, in 2010, has been spent performing amidst the AHL Adirondack Phantoms, in 2013. Brandon tallies at: 6 goals and 21 points in 65 games with the Phantoms, serving as the team’s alternate captain while earning a spot on the league’s All-Star team.
It is being reported that Brandon may have to be patient for shift time on the ice this year, but this fan recalls watching Manning on the ice and the kid performs rather impressively and he skates like he’s been on NHL ice his lifetime. Combine this with the wisdom he will absorb from the great company within his lines: Kimmo Timonen, Mark Streit, Braydon Coburn, Andrej Meszaros, Luke Schenn and Nicklas Grossmann, in addition to at least two more on the roster.
Honestly, after watching the last three seasons, I seriously doubt that any coaching staff would simply ‘sit’ on a number of options, as injuries happen and we know this all too well right now. The roster changes this off season as well as the management alterations combined with the fierce drive to win of Peter Laviolette…and dare this fan say, a rather potentially solid duo to man our nets, guided by Ron Hextall — I do not see where any defensemen will sit at all this coming season. Everyone needs to be fresh and ready at all times and this fan is more confident that this will be the season where everything begins to come together to a team status and threat on the ice. This is how you not only win hockey games kids, this is how you bring Lord Stanley home, eventually.
Let’s face it, after the great goalies made their way through our nets and after a few years of worshiping one featured player and laying hopes on one guy and wondering why we did not get anywhere, this team appears to be more focused on the details of winning games. With the stopping forces of Mr.’s Emery and Mason with some Hexi animal tossed in to the mix, we are operating in the true sense of the word team and that my freinds, is crucial and proven to be much more productive.
With now 49 of the 50 maximum allowed on a complete roster for the NHL, this may be that coveted final piece of the puzzle, holding a spot to budge with later, if needed. This off season our organization got down to the nitty gritty of making the serious changes needed in numerous areas and this camp has new breath and life to it backed by some of the most solid coaching any athlete could dream of. This year holds potential for one hell of a season on Philly ice and it is time.

It is time our orange squad hit that ice in the heart of the game, and set a goal for the Holy Grail of the NHL, Lord Stanley, and this fan is confident to now sit back and watch the movie develop on the coming season.
