Paul McCartney has announced details of a his new album and released his new single online. Both are called, “New.”
The single is a bouncy, Beatles-type tune with a finale of lush harmonies. It’s got a pop feel to it which should find wide appeal.
McCartney told BBC6 Radio, “It’s catchy, it’s summery, it’s a love song. I think people will recognize it as definitely me.” He characterized it as “very positive.”
“It’s a love song but it’s saying don’t look at me. I haven’t got any answers. I don’t know how it’s all happeneing but it’s good and I love you.”
McCartney explained how he came to use four different producers on the album. “The Songs are quite varied. I was going to do one song with each producer and see who I got on with best, but I got on with all of them.”
Producers of his twelve-track album include Mark Ronson, who has worked with Amy Winehouse, Lady Gaga and Duran Duran. Also producing is Paul Epworth of Adele and Florence and the Machine fame. Also working with Sir Paul was Ethan Johns who has worked with Kings Of Leon and Ryan Adams. Giles Martin, son of legendary Beatles producer, George Martin, was at the helm for some tracks, as well.
McCartney said of Ronson producing the single, “Mark’s work with Amy Winehouse was sensational, so I knew he’d be good. He knows his music, he knows what he likes and the two of us together took the song and tried to put the maximum vibe into it.”
He said that working with Paul Epworth, however, involved improvisation.
“The tracks that are Paul’s on the album weren’t written. I didn’t bring them in, which is my normal method. He works completely differently. We went into the studio the first day I ever met him and he outlined (his) idea and said, ‘let’s just make it up.’
“I just started knocking something out on the piano, he started drumming to it, and I stuck a bit of bass on it and we had the basis of the song worked out.”
The album, New,” will be released on October 14 in the U. K. and October 15 in the U. S.
This will be his first album of new material since 2007’s, “Memory Almost Full.”
He is looking forward to performing the new album live. He has some dates in Japan booked, Saying that he likes to finish the year playing in his native land gives his British fans something to look forward to. It’s a good bet that the U. S. will see McCartney playing here in the new year.
