In the New England Patriots 30-23 victory over the Atlanta Falcons Sunday night, Patriots cornerback Aqib Talib made the biggest statement of all. As Boston.com reported on September 29, Talib came through when the team needed him the most.
With a key interception and his ability to shut down both Julio Jones and Roddy White, Talib made a statement of being a top shutdown cornerback who can made the big plays when the team needs him most.
Talib also proved how valuable he is to the Patriots defense as he was able to break up a potential game-tying pass from Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan to Roddy White in the end zone. The play extended the Patriots to 4-0 and also instilled more confidence in the team’s defense despite giving up a slight lead in the final minutes of the fourth quarter. Talib also called the game on Sunday a statement game.
“You got the whole league watching us, I mean the whole world watching. Everybody picked us to lose. Ya’ll guys, everybody picked us to lose.”
In a statement game, Talib made the biggest statement to Patriots coach Bill Belichick as the sixth year cornerback is playing for a new contract.
“Aqib played well for us all the way back to the spring and training camp. He played well. He played the ball well against good receivers. He tackled well. He covered well. He’s done a good job for us since he has been here.”
Aqib Talib is providing the Patriots with something they have been missing since the days of Asante Samuel, a shutdown corner who could change the complexion of a football game with a single play.
