Finding a good restaurant to eat at is some times puzzling when on vacation. Of course, the higher end restaurants will generally offer a variety of fresh plates that came straight from their restaurant garden. The RedRossa in Pierre, SD, does not have the garden in the back, but does offer an elegant selection of salads that would make one suspect that there is a garden close by that they use.
The Gorgonzola and Pear Spinach Salad has ingredients of baby spinach, prosciutto, shaved pear, dried cranberries, spiced walnuts, gorgonzola, seared chicken and sweet vidalia dressing and are all Paleo friendly. The cheese is up to the individual of course, some people are more sensitive than others to the effects of dairy, and some don’t think it should be part of any meal.
The Balsamic Salmon Salad includes mixed greens, asparagus, bell pepper, red onion, mushrooms, tomato, seared atlantic salmon, honey glazed almonds with a herb balsamic vinaigrette. The Apple Wedge Salad has a few ingredients to avoid, such as candied pecans and ‘creamy’ Romano dressing, but will be delicious with the remaining ingredients of Granny Smith apples, apple wood smoked bacon, tomatoes, gorgonzola, all over an iceberg wedge.
This Italian restaurant has the usual pasta dishes and pizzas available, but also burgers, steaks, seafood, and pork. The longer a person eats Paleo, the easier it gets to ask for the food ordered to be made Paleo friendly. Ordering a burger with out a bun and getting a Paleo friendly dressing to replace the offered dressing are requests that a kitchen staff could easily oblige to. Also, inquiring about the quality of beef the restaurant orders, if real butter is available, and any other curiosities that enter the ‘caveman or cave woman’s’ mind will get easier and may lend to the establishment that healthier menu choices will make customers happy.
RedRossa’s Bone in Pork Chop is an 8 oz center cut served with fingerling potatoes, the house vegetables and aged balsamic vinegar and fig sauce. The sauce alone is divine and perfectly compliments the tender pork chop meat.
RedRossa Italian Grille in Pierre, SD, is a great place to dine. The service is friendly and helpful, very efficient for the high amount of patrons they serve. The hotel that they are attached to, the ClubHouse Hotel and Suites in Pierre, SD, also had great customer service, impeccable rooms, and an amazing style that made staying there a treat.
The only suggestion is that they would offer Paleo friendly ‘pasta’ and desserts. Chicken Pesto Pasta, at Paleo OMG ,would be a great pasta dish to offer. They could pair it with the recipe from Civilized Caveman Cooking Creations, Lemon Pound Cake with Lemon Honey Glaze. These would both make excellent additions to RedRossa’s menu. Their are many other pasta recipes that would offer more choices for those who are gluten and dairy sensitive, the Paleo lifestyle, and those who just would like a new twist to the menu selections available.
The mentioning of a Paleo pasta and desserts by customers more often, may result in new additions to their menu selections, Paleo friendly selections. According to the National Institutes of Health, Univ. of Chicago Celiac Disease Center, “People with CD dine out 80% less than they used to before diagnosis and believe less than 10% of eating establishments have a ‘very good’ or ‘good’ understanding of GF diets.” This is a huge cut into restaruant business when you consider that 1 in every 133 Americans have Celiac Disease and need a gluten free diet.
