On August 13, 2013 Russell Simmons launched his newest venture “All Def Digital YouTube Network” in collaboration with Awesomeness TV CEO Brian Robbins. However, one of the first comedy skits produced by the channel featured Harriet Tubman in a scandalous sex tape debacle, rubbing many Americans the wrong way. The video has since been removed from the channel but not before Peter Cashing (<–Thanks!) could snag the proof and download for all who wouldn’t believe it, to see for themselves.
One woman gave the following personal response to Simmons in regards:
I read your letter to Don Lemon a few weeks back and I was very proud of you for standing your ground for all of us. I was already a fan of yours, inspired by your fervor in the entertainment industry opening doors for the talents that desired to step in and do the work necessary to fulfill their goals. Then, in my opinion, you took that success and transformed it into a multifaceted empire opening even more doors, your own underground railroad so to speak.
Today however, I am disgusted with you as I believe you have let your true colors show. Not black or brown, but a bright and sparkly “misogynistic” red, white, and blue. How hypocritical of you to chastise Lemon for blaming young African Americans for their plight because they don’t, as you said “Speak the king’s language or wear belts around their waistbands.” Yet you are partnered and promoting “entertainment” that demeans, degrades, and demotes Harriet Tubman. Ultimately, your association with this project is your stamp of approval on furthering the degradation of women as a whole and Black history. That crap of a comedy skit portraying Tubman in a sex tape scandal, misdirects focus from the fact that she was a fearless, independent, and enduring warrior and in it’s stead, allows people to consider the possibility that she may have been a willing participant in the demoralization of Black women slaves and a scheming con-artist that couldn’t get anything accomplished without turning tricks, massah at that! Talk about Black on Black crime, it’s “Black History” blasphemy! those of us still in the struggle see this bullshit as the type of nonsense that unnecessarily compounds the hurdles we incur.
Don’t you think American society, especially the Black community, has enough under-education and miss-education (pun intended) in relation to Black History? Don’t you think Black women endure enough hatred and degradation? Let me answer that for you, “Hell yes!” Check out some Daily Black History Facts and promote that!
Let’s get this straight, there are some things that simply must remain sacred and off limits. How dare you participate in desecrating her honor. There is no amount of money, fame, or fortune that should ever motivate you to support or promote an ugly misrepresentation of any of our pioneers such as Harriet Tubman.
Harriet “Moses” Tubman led hundreds of enslaved African Americans to freedom via the proverbial “Underground Railroad.” Astute and focused, she never lost a passenger, rendering all who followed her path successfully to freedom. A nurse, scout, spy, and nurturer in the Union Army, she was the first woman to lead an armed expedition into battle #fiercewomen.
During her enslavement which certainly included the familiar incessant violence synonymous with American slavery, she incurred further life changing abuse. On a particular day in town, a neighboring slave owner, yelled over ordering Harriet to assist in blocking the path of another slave near her that was trying to escape but Harriet refused to do so. In an effort to stop the slave himself, the slave owner threw a brick at him and missed, hitting Harriet instead and she incurred an injurious blow to the head. Bleeding and unconscious she was transported back to her plantation with no medical attention. After a couple of days, she was sent back out into the fields to work.
That blow to the head caused her seizures and as she told the story many times also visions, for the rest of her life and undoubtedly a number of other issues, yet it did not deter her. As a matter of fact, it propelled her even more. With that in mind, I hope all women and men that would be negatively impacted or gain a negative perspective from the rotten fruits of your newest capital venture, will take this blow as motivation to fight harder against injustices.
There were large monetary rewards offered for the capture and return of many of the slaves Harriet saved. If she were the tainted nympho your network’s debauchery portrayed her to be, she would have turned them in for the money, yet she saved hundreds of captives from slavery. Her actions and success matched her mission, signifying she never lost focus of her vision and believed in what she was doing.
What about you Russell? Have you lost focus? Do you no longer have vision? Do you believe in what you’re doing?
Little old Black Kinky-haired Woman and proud
P.S. Yeah, we know you took the video down. The point is, you should have never been down with putting it up. Please don’t come back with some lame excuse like “It was created and posted without your knowledge, blah, blah, blah” or downplaying the severity with some b.s. about people being too sensitive. We all know a shrewd business person such as yourself is in control of everything that comes out with your name associated with it.
