On September 26, 2013, MyMeApparel Atlanta Fashion & Entertainment Examiner was summoned to the luxurious JW Marriott hotel, by Kravetz PR, to take in a one-on-one interview with R&B Singer, and now shoe designer, Keyshia Cole. The topic of discussion was the Steve Madden Keyshia Cole Collection product launch.
While family, friends and fans of Keyshia Cole eagerly awaited her appearance at the Steve Madden store in Lenox Square Mall of Atlanta, Georgia, MyMeApparel took a moment to catch up with Cole to get a clue about Keyshia Cole, her inspirations and what’s in store for her.
Keyshia Cole, thus far, as self proclaimed, has had a long, bumpy journey. With all of the “big names” that Cole has worked with (such as Tupak Shakur, MC Hammer, Sean “P Diddy” Combs, Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Ashanti, Missy Elliott, Monica, Lil Kim, and more) it only stands to reason that there might be a disagreement or two. Family past and media pressures, with spotlights on differences between Cole and others in the music industry, have sometimes overshadowed her awesome tenacity to survive and be the person that she was meant to be and is surely becoming.
The last few years have brought her that much closer to a step closer to familial stability with her marriage to former Cleveland Cavaliers shooting guard, Daniel Hiram Gibson, and the arrival of their son, Daniel Hiram Gibson, Jr, now three years old.
Cole has also seen much success with her musical and reality TV career as of late with hits like “Trust and Believe”, “Enough of No Love”, and her latest, “Woman to Woman” to name a few. (Each yielding Billboard presence and millions of video views on YouTube.)
During the Steve Madden Keyshia Cole Collection product launch event, the Keyshia Cole “Woman to Woman” music CD was available for purchase, along with the complete shoe line. Several of the ladies attending the event came already decked out in their favorite Steve Madden Keyshia Cole Collection picks. Cole was also adorned in her pick of the day, which happened to be the KC-Suppa Leopard Multi, retail value $189.95.
So, how does one go from singer to shoe designer?
When asked where her journey began to become a shoe designer, Cole stated that she has always loved shoes. What girl doesn’t, right? So, what is different about Keyshia Cole’s love for shoes and most other girls’?
The short answer is an inquiry, a few conversations and most importantly connections!
The longer answer is that someone took the time to ask Cole what she would like to do outside of music. Her answer was that she always had an interest in designing shoes. Fast forward a few conversations later, with people that matter, a meeting set up between Keyshia Cole and the Steve Madden team … and the rest is history.
Where does Cole’s inspiration come from?
Musically, Keyshia Cole has been inspired by Tupak Shakur (who would have been her true introductory link to the music industry had he lived long enough), Anita Baker, Mary J Blige, MC Lyte, Queen Latifah and Kid ‘n Play, … to name a few and for various reasons.
Keyshia Cole’s music is a reflection of her relationship experiences.
The new Steve Madden Keyshia Cole shoe collection is inspired by what she would and would not like to wear, what she would like to see available and a desire to provide what is not currently in the marketplace.
What’s in Keyshia Cole’s future?
… A trip to the Bahamas. Who can blame her! The Bahamas are beautiful, especially for filming music videos, like “Heaven Sent”.
Also, ironically, two of Keyshia Cole’s idols Queen Latifah and MC Lyte have teamed up to be the delight on our television screens with the new “Queen Latifah Show”, a talk show. When asked if she is planning to make an appearance on the show, Cole stated that she would love to be on the “Queen Latifah Show” ( #QLShow ). As well, she stated that she would like to make a guest appearance on the re-emerged “Arsenio Hall Show” on CBS.
Most likely, she would like these appearances to have an opportunity to promote the Steve Madden Keyshia Cole Collection. The current collection is chock-full of heels, lots of platforms and pumps with sassy names and price points ranging from $99.95 to $229.95. Cole said that her desire for future collections is to include wedges
“Wedges … A lot of the girls just don’t wear heels.” ~Keyshia Cole, on glimpse for next Steve Madden Keyshia Cole Collection.
Keyshia Cole is proving to be a soft-spoken, yet “say what it is” powerhouse who continues to know what she want and shows that she is not afraid to take the risks necessary to get it.
Keyshia Cole sings “I Choose You” and MyMeApparel Atlanta Fashion and Entertainment Examiner’s vote is that we choose you, too, Keyshia! … and your Mixx, WRKit and Diva shoes, from you Steve Madden Keyshia Cole Collection!
Happy Birthday, Keyshia (on October 15th) … and we hope you enjoy your gifts from MyMeApparel!
