Hype is a mother these days. With social media and all the various outlets for a film’s marketing these days its easy to get behind something. You’re Next unfortunately falls in this category. Was it a horrible movie? No, not at all. Was it as remarkable as people are making it out to be? Not even close. As usual with any big film I will not include spoilers in this review so what you are reading are my thoughts and reactions to You’re Next.
You’re Next is the new film starring Sharni Vinson as a young woman celebrating her boyfriends parents anniversary with his family. Once everyone is settled they become targeted by a group of killers. So this is your typical run of the mill home invasion flick right? No it’s not but it’s still a home invasion horror and when you find out what’s going on i’d be curious to your reaction. I think Adam Wingard and crew did a great job of shooting You’re Next and overall i really had no issues with the cast. Some familiar faces mixed in with Vinson who plays Erin and of course she steals the show. The reasoning behind her doing this is a little suspect but by the time you find out you could care less. The beauty in You’re Next is the brutal violence that happens to the cast. Typical family setting, one loser brother, one dim witted sister, one black sheep brother and the oldest who thinks he is god’s gift to everyone. You’re Next gave me a feel of 80’s horror with a small introduction of the characters then chaos then a little more about the characters then chaos again. Its a formula that has been around forever in horror and it works here. If it was not for the kills and Vinson there would be nothing to speak of with this film because there is about 100 out right now in that same vein. Erin and the kills are the reason to see this film because everything else is just, well , blah.
I was not a fan of the execution of this film and that’s what lost it for me. Why a film would give up so much so early I have no clue. I keep hearing “they changed the way horror should be in this film” and I don’t see it. I can name 5 movies that came out last year that changed the look of horror and they are equally different from each other. You’re Next really brings nothing new to the table outside of Erin. I was hoping for more but felt a little slighted after it was over. The hardest thing about writing reviews for films like this is I’m not a fan of the movie but I think many will enjoy what it has to offer. There is no doubt in my mind that this is a very entertaining film but so are “twerk” videos and what do they really have to offer? Should you go see this movie? Yes you should. The lead is worth it,and the kills are worth it. Just don’t be surprised if your over it soon after it starts. I will jump on the bandwagon and say this film is not like The Strangers at all. Being the only horror aficionado at my office has led many of a question regarding how close to the The Strangers this movie is and its really only because of the masks. There is more shock value than scare value here and the overall creepiness in The Strangers (or even it’s originator Them)is not found in You’re Next. It is a lot more in your face which is actually smart by Wingard because that’s the day in age we live in. You’re Next has a minimal potential to be a classic but certain things about it fell short. Its one of the things I despised. I want to be able to re watch horror films when they are on TV or DVD and that won’t happen with You’re next and you will see why. I’m giving You’re Next a 3 star rating really due to how much I liked the lead and kills but it goes no higher due to poor execution. Recently I’ve heard certain movies being called “horror movies for horror nerds”. If that’s the case then You’re Next is a horror movie for dummies. There is no surprise there is no thinking its just a Facebook status.
If by any chance there is a sequel to this I just hope they are a little smarter with the story line. Like I said I think this will do well in theaters and have a great first opening weekend. As always I’m curious to your thoughts so let me know what you thought of You’re Next!
