“Now You See Me”, the caper/thriller film starring an ensemble cast including Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Mark Ruffalo, and Morgan Freeman, released on DVD and Blu-ray September 3.
“Now You See Me” is an entertaining twist on the heist movie that manages to hold attentions with their magic tricks and other necessary visual splendors.
The film follows a super-team of the world’s greatest magicians called “The Four Horsemen” as they pull of a series of heists while evading a squad of FBI agents that includes Dylan Rhodes (Mark Ruffalo) and an Interpol detective, Alma Dray (Mélanie Laurent).
French director Louis Leterrier, known for “The Transporter” and “Clash of the Titans”, is no stranger to visual extravagance and quick action. This film sees a lot of this through the CGI illusions, as well as plenty practical tricks, and the fast-paced action sequences. There are a lot of sweeping camera shots, and it hardly ever slows down which keeps the audience on their toes trying to keep up with what’s going on.
This pace helps and hurts the film. Although it keeps the film under a certain type of tension, the plot gets complicated and by the end the audience is left with plot points that are either open or not clearly resolved. For those who can keep up with the film, while not questioning anything that is going on, this will go unnoticed.
The cast features stars from various countries including Jesse Eisenberg, Mark Ruffalo, Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher, Mélanie Laurent, Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine. The casting seems a little off on first glance, but the actors play their parts well in roles that are not usual for any of them.
Overall, “Now You See Me” is entertaining whether you understand what just happened or not and will keep audiences watching the whole time by distracting them with grand visuals and high-pace action sequences.
“Now You See Me” has a run time of approximately 115 minutes, and is rated PG-13 for language, some action and sexual content.
The Blu-ray features a 1080p/AVC-encoded presentation in a 2.40:1 aspect ratio. The sharpness and detail featured on this presentation is fantastic. Colors are great, blacks are solid, and the image is clear. Overall, this is a top-notch video presentation by Summit Entertainment paired with beautiful cinematography.
The Blu-ray features the best lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1. The variety of action sequences in the film couples well with the audio quality. Immersion is perfect, especially during the magic show scenes that feature a large audience around the magicians’ voices. Dialogue is heard clearly through the front speakers, and prioritizes perfectly in the busy soundscape. Very nice audio presentation.
There is one audio commentary and multiple Blu-ray exclusives. The bonus features include:
- Commentary with Producer Bobby Cohen and Director Louis Leterrier
- Deleted Scenes*
- Extended Director’s Cut*
- “Now You See Me” Revealed
- A Brief History of Magic*
“Now You See Me” is enjoyable despite a plot that is all over the place by combining fun and dazzle in a way that will entertain the majority of audiences.
