The Norcross Blue Devils began this season as the No. 5 team in the nation and were picked by many to repeat as state champions in Class AAAAAA, but now find themselves in a must-win game against the Mill Creek Hawks in Week 6 of the GHSA season after losing big to Washington (Miami), 55-0, and North Gwinnett, 36-17.
With no less than 15 players that will be headed to Division I ball next year, including Lorenzo Carter (the top DE in the nation), Norcross (2-2, 1-1) is the deeper, more talented team but they have not played well against their two toughest opponents so far.
Mill Creek (3-1, 1-1) is a good team that is young and plays hard, as evidenced by last week’s effort in a one-point loss to Peachtree Ridge, but they lack experience under pressure. Before the loss to the Lions, the Hawks had beaten three teams that now have a combined mark of 3-9. The Peachtree Ridge game was their first true challenge and they made too many mistakes, lost their composure at times and racked up 15 penalties-yet lost by only a point.
Both teams need this win to stay competitive in the region race. A loss will be the second in region for either team, and both still have tough games on the schedule with teams that are currently undefeated. Mill Creek still has to play North Gwinnett and Collins Hill, while Norcross will take on Collins Hill and Peachtree Ridge.
Expect the game to be a battle into the second half that sees Norcross take control in the final quarter and win by a couple of scores.
Players to Watch:
QB Daniel David is 36-of-58 passing for 629 yards and five touchdowns and has gained 196 yards rushing with two TDs. Carter Governale has 248 yards and six TDs on 37 carries to lead the Hawks in rushing.
The Blue Devils offensive attack is evenly balanced and is led by QB AJ Bush. The senior has a 50% completion percentage (43-of-86), 538 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions. Josh Boyd has emerged as the top running back on his way to 391 yards on 58 carries, including five TDs. Lorenzo Carter is rated by many as the top DE in the nation and spends much of the game in the opposing team’s backfield.
