“The X Factor” U.K. judge Nicole Scherzinger has denied a rumor that she’s getting back together with her on-again/off-again boyfriend Lewis Hamilton, who is a Formula One driver. In a Daily Mirror article published on Aug. 31, 2013, Scherzinger commented on the status of her relationship with Hamilton: “The truth is, we’re no longer together. It is over. I know he’s been very public about trying to get me back, but we’re still not together … I don’t know what the future holds.”
The Daily Mirror also reported that Mary J. Blige is the guest mentor paired with Scherzinger for the “judges’ houses” phase of the competition in 2013. This year, Scherzinger is mentoring the Girls category (female solo singers ages 16 to 24), and her “judges’ houses” episodes will be filmed in Antigua.
There’s no word yet on which celebrities are paired as guest mentors with the other “X Factor” U.K. judges (Gary Barlow, Sharon Osbourne and Louis Walsh) in 2013. It also hasn’t been publicly revealed yet where the other judges will film their “judges’ houses” episodes. In 2013, Walsh is mentoring the Boys category (male solo singers ages 16 to 24); Osbourne is mentoring the Overs category (solo singers ages 25 and over); and Barlow is mentoring the Groups category.
Meanwhile, Scherzinger’s relationship with Hamilton has been in the media spotlight for years and continues to be a topic of tabloid gossip.
On Aug. 10 2013, the Daily Mirror published a report that Hamilton and Scherzinger had a secret tryst at her home in Los Angeles in early August 2013. That story led to speculation that Hamilton and Scherzinger had gotten back together.
Scherzinger and Hamilton broke up in June 2013. It was reportedly for the same reason why they broke up in 2011: Their busy work schedules and living in different countries often kept them apart and eventually took a toll on the relationship. And based on tabloid reports, Hamilton was the one who dumped Scherzinger.
Former Pussycat Dolls singer Scherzinger and Hamilton met in 2007 and began dating in 2008. They broke up in January 2011 and October 2011, but they got back together a few months after each breakup.
Scherzinger (who is 35) and Hamilton (who is 28) were last seen in public together at the Canadian Grand Prix on June 9, 2013, according to the Daily Mirror.
An unnamed source close to Hamilton told the Daily Mirror about Hamilton and Scherzinger’s “secret” rendezvous at her home in August 2013: “Both Nicole and Lewis had a bit of time off so it was the perfect time to meet. After the split he was devastated so when he suggested that he fly out to see Nicole, he was delighted she said yes. He went to her house in Los Angeles to talk things through and both thought it was a great success. It was the last opportunity when they could spend time together and talk through their future. They desperately want to be together but they know that from now until Christmas is going to be really tough. They’re both willing to give it their best shot and try to make a success of it though. They love one another dearly and have deeply missed each other since they split.”
After the breakup this year, Hamilton made it clear that he missed having Scherzinger in his life. His numerous tweets after the breakup paint a portrait of a man who is so lonely that his dog is his best friend. On July 7, 2013, he even tweeted a photo of himself hugging his bulldog Roscoe with this message: “My best buddy…Roscoe!”
On Aug. 9, 2013, he tweeted a photo of Roscoe with this accompanying message: “Roscoe and me n a road trip only someone’s missing #partnerincrime.”
Aug. 4, 2013, he also tweeted the dog lying on its back on a bed. In the accompanying message, Hamilton tweeted: “Yo, I used to wake up to the most beautiful woman in the world & now look what I wake up to…..balls…”
On July 23, 2013, he tweeted: “Nicole once told me how beautiful Vienna was, now I see she was right. Have training here tomorrow.”
He also tweeted on July 19, 2013: “If you’ve found that special someone, don’t EVER let them go no matter what!! Nothing in this world is more important.”
After winning the Hungarian Grand Prix victory on Juy 28, 2013, Hamilton made this statement to reporters: “It’s not been the easiest few months, I was just saying that my family have been really supportive. It feels a little bit odd without that someone here, but I would say now that these are one of those races you want to dedicate to that someone.”
On July 1, 2013, a spokesperson for Scherzinger confirmed to the Mail Online (the Daily Mail’s website) that Hamilton and Scherzinger ended their relationship. A unnamed source told the Mail Online: “Nicole is just so heartbroken and completely devastated.”
In an article published by The Sun on July 1, 2013, an unnamed source commented about this latest Scherzinger/Hamilton breakup: “It’s so hard to keep up a relationship when they’re barely in the same country as each other. Both have supported each other in their careers and will continue to do so. But the nature of their work ultimately cost their relationship.”
The news about the breakup came just one day after Hamilton lost out on a spot in the British Grand Prix and two days after Scherzinger’s 35th birthday. In 2011 and 2012, Scherzinger celebrated her birthday with high-profile parties (in Las Vegas in 2011 and in London in 2012), but she kept a low profile for her birthday in 2013, no doubt due to the breakup.
In June 2013, The Sun quoted Hamilton as saying that he and Scherzinger could be engaged to be married by 2014: “We’ve been together for five years, which is quite a milestone really. But hopefully in the near future. Maybe before we get to six years.”
Scherzinger said in an interview published in Marie Claire (U.K. edition)’s December 2012 issue that she plans to be a wife and a mother by the year 2017, when she is 39 years old: “I’m not getting any younger. I don’t want to have kids now, though. Five years might be a good time to look at having children but whenever it’s meant to happen is when it will happen. Right now, I’m focusing on my career …
“I see lots of women having beautiful children later in life. And, if not, just freeze your eggs! When I’m a mum, I’m not going to be one of those mums who has nannies. Actually, I might have nannies — never say never — but I’m not having someone else raise my kids.”
Hamilton and Scherzinger repeatedly denied rumors that they are secretly engaged. But with the Marie Claire interview, Scherzinger publicly put Hamilton on notice about her timeline of when she wants to become a wife and mother.
Scherzinger and Hamilton’s breakups have reportedly been because of their busy work schedules and because they couldn’t agree on when to start a family. She joined “The X Factor” U.K. in June 2012, as a replacement for former judge Kelly Rowland, who exited the show in April 2012. Rowland became a judge on “The X Factor” U.S. in May 2013, as a replacement for Britney Spears.
In 2012, Scherzinger, an American whose main home is in Los Angeles, told the media that she was willing to do whatever it takes to make the relationship work with Hamilton, who is British and lives primarily in Monaco. In between her duties on “The X Factor” U.K., she had been flying around the world to attend Formula One races to cheer on Hamilton. There have been tabloid reports that Hamilton was not happy that Scherzinger took “The X Factor” U.K. job and was contemplating breaking up with her over it, and that is why she seemed so willing to have an exhausting schedule of flying to wherever he is on her days off from work.
In July 2012, the couple survived a tabloid scandal when Hamilton was seen partying in a London hotel room with several scantily clad women while Scherzinger was in Los Angeles. (There were other men in the room too.) Hamilton was also seen kissing another woman at the hotel, but he later went on Twitter to say that the woman was just a friend of his and that the kiss was not romantic. Several tabloids reported that Scherzinger was furious with Hamilton but she forgave him after he begged her to not break up with him and promised to not put himself in a compromising situation again.
In the Marie Claire interview, Scherzinger angrily denied rumors that she passionately kissed Chris Brown while they were hanging out together at a Los Angeles nightclub in September 2012: “I’ve known Chris since he started in the business. He’s like a little brother. He’s one of the most talented people in the industry.”
Scherzinger was a judge on “The X Factor” U.S. in 2011, but she was fired after getting a lot of complaints from viewers who thought she was too ditzy and indecisive. Scherzinger defended her job performance on the show: “I did a great job with my contestants. I still brought ratings to the damn show. Everybody was talking about it — that’s not a bad thing.
“I’m a very sincere and honest person, and if you think that’s boring you can turn off and watch something else. I’m not going to change just to try to fit in. I’m very experienced in my art, and in music, and in what we’re looking for. That ‘boring’ crap is hogwash. You try to do my job. And if you still think it’s boring, then check out my music videos on YouTube because that’s not boring.”
Scherzinger did much better on “The X Factor” U.K. than she did on the American version of the show. In 2012, “The X Factor” U.K.’s final two contestants (winner James Arthur and runner-up Jahmene Douglas) were mentored by Scherzinger. Because of this success, Scherzinger was reportedly able to negotiate an “X Factor” salary raise in 2013 that was double of what she made in 2012. According to The Sun and the Daily Mirror, Scherzinger’s “X Factor” salary in 2012 was £750,000, compared to the £1.5 million “X Factor” salary she’s getting in 2013.
Scherzinger’s solo music career has also thrived in the U.K., where she has had several Top 10 hits as a solo artist. By contrast, her solo career has stalled in the U.S., where her biggest solo hit was “Right There” (featuring 50 Cent), which peaked at No. 39 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 2011. Her next U.S. single, “Don’t Hold Your Breath,” reached a lowly No. 86 on the chart, but the song was a No. 1 hit in the U.K.
Interscope Records still has not set a U.S. release date for any of Scherzinger’s solo albums. Her first solo album, “Killer Love,” was released in Europe in March 2011. Her second solo album (title and release date to be announced) is due out sometime in 2013. The album’s first single, “Boomerang,” was a No. 6 hit on the U.K. singles chart.
In October 2012, Scherzinger opened up in a VH1 “Behind the Music” episode by revealing that she was bulimic and addicted to self-harming during the height of her fame with the Pussycat Dolls. She also revealed publicly for the first time that she sang almost all of the vocals on the Pussycat Dolls songs when she was in the group. In her “Behind the Music” interview, Scherzinger said that with the help of therapy and Hamilton, she was able to overcome her addictions.
She told Marie Claire that she is much more secure with herself now than when she was younger: “When I hit my thirties, that’s when I calmed down and I wasn’t so tough on myself.I wasn’t doing the yo-yo dieting any more. I gave myself a break. I think that, if you’re more accepting of yourself, you’re more free and open and can just allow more people in.”
Scherzinger described her relationship with Hamilton as being “a team and we’re really there for each other … The time we spend together I do cherish. It’s separate from everything else. I’m going to take care of the man I’m with. I grew up in a household where my mom takes care of my dad — she cooks, she does everything — and that’s the kind of girl I am.”
