The first Bobby Combs Century Doubles tournament of the new bowling season will take place on Sunday, Sept. 15, at AMF Bradenton Lanes.
The event features a unique format, with all doubles teams consisting of partners whose combined ages total 100 or more as of the tournament date. Each team will roll three handicap (90 percent of 220) games.
Competition will begin at 2 p.m., and the cost is $30 per doubles team. The fee breakdown consists of $12 for lineage, $14 into the prize fund and $4 earmarked for the Sarasota-Manatee Youth Scholarship Fund.
In addition, an optional Alibi Doubles competition — at a cost of $10, or $5 per bowler — gives each entrant the opportunity to combine scores bowled by other tournament entrants.
Pre-entries are requested, but walk-ins will be accepted, pending lane availability. However, walk-ins must register at least 45 minutes prior to the 2 p.m. starting time.
In conjunction with the tournament, there will be a special raffle to kick off the new season. The winner will receive a football autographed by famed basketball broadcaster Dick Vitale, and the football also includes a photo of Vitale along with Lou Holtz, a former well-known football coach at Notre Dame. The football is displayed in a case and comes with an autographed book. Raffle tickets are $5 each, and you can get them by contacting Sandy Combs prior to or on the day of the event, but there is a limited supply. Her e-mail address is firstname.lastname@example.org
Three other Bobby Combs Century Doubles tournaments have been scheduled throughout the 2013-2014 fall-winter league season, and they will be held at 2 p.m. on the following dates at the respective bowling centers: Dec. 8 at Sarasota Lanes; March 16 at Treasure Lanes in Port Charlotte; and May 18 at AMF Gulf Gate Lanes.
In the most-recent Bobby Combs Century Doubles event, held May 5 at Treasure Lanes, there were 47 entries, and more than $1,500 was raised for the area youth scholarship fund. Phil Williams and Steve Polanski emerged victorious in the first such tournament held at a Port Charlotte venue, and to read a full report of that tournament, click here.
