Tonight’s Food Network episode of “Mystery Diners” was titled, “Strange Brew” where Charles Stiles and his crew of undercover diners came to “Newport Beach Brewing Company” because owner Michael Madlock, believes that something is going on at his restaurant that is not adding up.
Charles and Amber met with Michael, who told them that reviews state people are drinking beers not made there. He suspects Derek; the brewmaster is making beers that are not on the menu.
The crew got to work setting up the cameras and microphones to get to the bottom of things. Amber will pose as a customer and Grant will be a bar back. Grant has not seen anything in the week that he worked there to put suspicion on him. Amber went in and asked about cucumber beer, but Derek did not seem to know what she was talking about. Another bartender named Mike, came on to tend bar and Amber overheard him talking to Derek about making cheddar beer. He told Derek that they could go into business together, but Derek did not agree.
When Derek was out of earshot, she asked Mike about cucumber beer, and he said that he made it. He asked her if she liked strawberries, which she loved. He told her to stick around, and he will have some strawberry lager a little later. Grant asked him about the strawberry beer, and he was happy that they were inquiring. When asked by Grant why they didn’t make it there, he told him that management did not want it.
When Derek completed his shift, Mike was raring to go, with Grant onboard with his plan, he told him that he intended to own his own brewery and not work for anyone else. He told Grant that he made it at his home and uses this place for his testing ground. He had another waiter, Danny go to the parking lot and bring in a cooler.
Now Mike and Danny put their plan into operation, as they await the crowd, Amber got to taste the beer. She raved about it to Mike, but told Charles that it tasted like it was made in a bathtub. So now Mike is selling sub-par beer to Michael’s customers as Michael fumed while watching this clandestine operation. Grant brought a beer to Charles and Michael to taste. They both agreed that the beer was horrible. When Amber attempted to pay with a credit card, Mike told her that it could only be paid for with cash, because he put the money in his pocket.
When customers asked for the indigenous beers, they were told by Danny that they were out of the most popular beers, and he pushed the strawberry beer. Finally, before Michael exploded, he went to get Mike and bring him back to the control room. Mike tried to tell Michael that he was helping him out and intended to split the money with him. He was fired immediately, and Michael was very glad that his brewmaster; Derek was the good guy.
Had it not been for the “Mystery Diners,” this situation could have been the ruination of this landmark bar and restaurant.
Four months later, Mike has been unsuccessful in promoting his own beer; Danny now works somewhere else, and Derek is doing an awesome job making only the beer that is sold at the “Newport Beach Brewing Company.”
