On Sunday, August 25, 2013, MTV hosted the 2013 Video Music Awards (VMAs) in Brooklyn, NY at the Barclay’s Center. This year marked the first time the VMAs were hosted in Brooklyn. MTV hyped up the VMAs saying “No Sleep ‘TIl Brooklyn” to market the event. The VMAs are hosted annually to recognize and award the best music videos of the year.
The VMAs also featured many great performances and debuts. Lady Gaga debuted her new song “Applause” and Katy Perry performed her latest single “Roar” for the first time under the Brooklyn Bridge. The most talked about performances of the night were performances by Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke and Justin Timberlake’s medley. Cyrus’ performance was very risqué to say the least with some sexual innuendos and twerking throughout her performance. Timberlake’s performance featured a medley of his biggest hits throughout his career and a surprise reunion of boy band *NSYNC! the entire audience were on their feet dancing and singing along throughout Timberlake’s 15 minute performance, with many jaws dropping in astonishment of the return of *NSYNC.
After Timberlake’s performance, Jimmy Fallon awarded him with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. This award is given to innovators in the music industry, and is not given every year. Timberlake joins the list with fellow artists Madonna, Michael Jackson, The Beatles, Bon Jovi and U2.
