Martin Manley was a sports enthusiast who was well-known for his sports articles and ability to work with statistics. He was a distinguished writer with a creative flare. He turned 60 years old on August 15, 2013. However, this was not just another birthday for him. It was the day he took his own life by executing a very well-thought-out plan which he began to devise on January 1, 2012. Most suicides that occur do not get national attention and many suicide notes do not get seen by anyone other than the people to whom they are written. However, Martin Manley’s suicide did get national attention and many people have read his suicide note- because he created an entire website devoted to explaining his unique reason for committing suicide.
Manley’s reasons were not what you would expect to hear from someone who has chosen to end his or her life. He wasn’t in financial ruin; he wasn’t in legal trouble. He wasn’t dying of a terminal disease. Manley simply did not want to be around to see himself unable to do simple tasks of daily living. He didn’t want to be a burden to a nursing staff. He did not want to be around to see the world get much worse. He wanted to end his life while he still could- before someone tried to stop him and put him away in a mental institution or nursing home facility.
Although suicide is considered by many to be a permanent solution to a temporary problem, for Manley suicide was the most logical solution to a future problem that he wanted to avoid altogether. Manley was beginning to show signs of dementia and did not want to get to a point in which he didn’t know who he was and what he was doing. Manley decided to end his life on his terms. His website mentions the idea that we are born into this world and that is not our choice to be here. However, we actually do have control over when and how we exit this world. Martin Manley chose to shoot himself outside a local police station so that his family and landlord would not have to clean up his mess. He called in to the police prior to shooting himself to let them know he was reporting a suicide. He had a note on him when he was found by police, and the note explained what he wanted the police to do for him. The note detailed his choice of cremation which was paid for in advance and it instructed them to not contact his sister because she was to learn of his death through an overnight letter he had sent her.
Martin Manley’s website detailing his life and choice to commit suicide was created in order for him to leave a legacy. As Manley explains, he had no children or spouse and therefore the only way he could leave a legacy was to write something and have it published. Following his suicide, Martin Manley‘s website originally went live on Yahoo. Manley paid for five years of having his website online in advance, which was to begin on the day of his death. When Yahoo found out that his website was related to the decision to commit suicide, they took the entire website down. Manley’s sister has expressed the desire to have her brother’s website back up, but Yahoo has turned the idea down. The money Yahoo was given for the website has since been returned to Manley’s sister and another site has recently posted the website back up.
Manley’s website has offered the public a very personal view of one’s thought processes and decision-making regarding the idea of suicide. Although his website may have been viewed by many as controversial, one thing is for sure- Martin Manley’s legacy lives on.
