Here’s a new organic product that I predict will be taking the market by storm. Mamma Chia is a naturally sweetened “vitality” beverage that features a small amount of fruit juice and a lot of chia seeds. The flavor I tried was Blackberry Hibiscus, and it was fabulous. Unlike most bottled superfood drinks, this one is not full of sugar, so it’s actually healthful. Yet it tastes so delicious! I was just going to take one sip, but I polished off the bottle, and had there been another one here I would have been hard pressed to resist it.
The fruity flavor is just part of the attraction, though. The drink is packed with chia seeds, which have a consistency in liquids that resembles tapioca. If you tried my chia seed pudding, you know what I mean. Moreover, the health benefits of the drink are astonishing. It contains 2,500 mg. of omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, antioxidants, 4 g. of complete protein, and 95 mg. of calcium, and it is gluten-free, vegan, and certified GMO-free. Plus it’s only 120 calories per bottle and has only 14 grams of sugar in the form of a natural sweetener, agave nectar. You can find Mamma Chia in the health food cooler at Kroger’s.
Omega-3’s are the fatty acids that prevent plaque buildup and blood clots in your arteries, reduces high blood pressure, can relieve the pain of arthritis, boost your mood, reduce wrinkling of the skin, and improve memory. Most of us consume far too many omega-6 fats and not enough of the beneficial omega-3’s.
When you compare Mamma Chia to a regular soft drink like Mountain Dew, you’ll see what a vast difference there is in healthfulness. Mountain Dew has 110 calories for only 8 fluid ounces and a whopping 31 grams of sugar—in the form of high-fructose corn syrup. Mountain Dew also contains unhealthful ingredients like sodium benzoate and other preservatives, brominated vegetable oil, and yellow #5.
As much as I enjoyed Mamma Chia, there are a couple of things about it that I would change if I could. One is the price. It’s $4.50 a bottle, and that’s a one-serving bottle of 10 fluid ounces. Of course, to be honest, it’s worth it, considering the flavor and the health benefits. But at that price, it’s not something that most of us could drink very often. The other thing I would change is that Mamma Chia is not raw. Like nearly all bottled health beverages, it’s made from a concentrate and is essentially “cooked” while being bottled.
For these reasons, I suggest just trying one bottle to see if you like it and then perhaps making your own version of it at home. If you have a juicer, you could juice a handful of blackberries, add a little agave nectar for sweetening, put in 2 or 3 tablespoons of chia seeds (available at Nutra Foods Huber Heights or perhaps in your grocery’s health food section), and fill your glass the rest of the way up with cold spring water. I’ll be the first to admit that this won’t be exactly like Mamma Chia, but it will cost far less and will provide similar health benefits. You can tweak the flavor to suit you by adding other fruit flavors, and you’ll be getting the added advantage of using raw fruit juice.
Whether you decide to buy your Mamma Chia at the store or make it at home, it’s still a significant improvement from the usual health drinks. I hope it’s the harbinger of a new trend in lower-sugar drinks with greater health benefits.
