I love the Machete family. All the way back to the Spy Kids movies it’s hard not to be a fan of Robert Rodriguez fascination with the character Machete. The latest installment Machete Kills is in theaters today and even though many genre fans are excited to see this sequel they may feel let down after it’s over.
Machete Kills reprises the roles of Danny Trejo as Machete , Michelle Rodriguez as She’, Jessica Alba returns slightly in the film while the rest of the talent are all new comers. Charlie Estevez (Sheen) plays the president who needs Machete to take out a crazy revolutionary with a nuke bomb. Demian Bichir (The Bridge) plays Mendez the revolutionary that has a severe bi -polar disorder. Mel Gibson steals the movie playing the mad engineer Luther Vox, but the highlight of the movie is the character Chameleon played by Cuba Gooding Jr, Lady Gaga, and Antonio Banderas combined. It’s really the only thing I can say that kept me involved with the Machete Kills storyline. Nice seeing Alexa Vega (Spy Kids) grown up but can she not act anymore? I don’t recall her having any lines in the film. Sofia Vergara’s character of Desdemona was the down fall in the film for me as she was just annoying. There is no reason for Latin actors to exaggerate their Latin ways for these films, but that just shows how americanized she has become due to Modern Family fame.
There were many unnecessary parts to Machete Kills and coming in at 107 mins is way too long for a film like this. I’m sure the cast had a blast making this popcorn movie but outside of Gibson and the Chameleon actors, I feel most of the talent failed at keeping the grittiness that we experienced in the first film. The first Machete felt like a 70’s throwback while Machete Kills does a good job of paying homage to films of the 80’s. The trailer for Machete Kills Again : In Space looked awesome and I found myself wanting to see that movie more than the one I was watching.
The best part of Machete Kills is of course the outlandish kill scenes. Nothing is better than seeing a man being thrown into a helicopter by his intestines. I come to see Machete for the gore and thats what I got so I was pleased. Great job by Marko Zaror playing the role of Zaror in Machete Kills , he was a beast and pretty much kicked everyone’s ass. He was also a highlight to the film and I hope somehow he is found in the next.
All in all Machete Kills gives us what we expected. Sexy women, funny lines and great kill scenes. It’s a little too hollywood than the first one but that’s expected. I would like to see the series continued as I think the next film will be better. I would tell people who did not see the first that they may want to only to understand what type of film this is. Casual horror fans may not be a fan of Machete movies because it speaks to a forgotten time of grindhouse cinema. Unfortunately I don’t think many true horror fans will enjoy this as well. The main problem is it’s just too long. I found myself asking why is this movie still going at least two times. I hope that’s one thing they consider for the next release where the length does not kill Machete Kills but does some substantial damage.
Machete Kills is a movie that entertains and has a fun time making fun of themselves. I don’t think this will be received with as much appreciation as the first but it;’s still a good movie to see in theaters. If you wonder why I haven’t mentioned Danny Trejo’s performance its because I don’t need to. Machete don’t act!
