An article recently appearing in ventwing.com, Career Advice from an Ostrich stated that the next article would discuss a few tips for landing a position at a company outside or external to your current position.
For those who are confused by this statement it means as opposed to a position inside or internal to your current organization.
As promised, let’s get right into it.
Three tips for obtaining a position – EXTERNAL – outside your current organization.
TIP NUMBER ONE:
Let people know what you are seeking. Yes, that is correct. Not within your current company. Not on a billboard. The people you know: Your family members, your network and centers of influence, etc. The majority of positions are filled through introductions. A warm introduction into an organization at the proper level is the absolute number one method to obtain a job. Period.
TIP NUMBER TWO:
Know your answers to interview questions. Understand that outside of the HR area most people who will be interviewing you have not been trained how to interview. You should be able to predict the majority of the questions you will be asked. Think about a handful of success stories and a few challenges you have overcome. Practice these answers with facts. You will always be able to fit these into an interview. Be prepared to adjust some of the wording as needed in order to point out the appropriate strength for a specific interview.
TIP NUMBER THREE:
Know the company, the industry and the competition by conducting research and speaking with other people. Always ask a few questions when you are in an interview and given the opportunity to ask questions. Never, absolutely never, take a pass and not ask at least one question. Did I say NEVER?
You may develop additional tips to utilize. There is nothing wrong with that. One warning – keep it simple. Too many tips may add confusion. Confusion may cause stress. Stress may cause confusion. Confusion may bring out fear. So let’s not bring out fear. Keep it simple.
In closing, what do you do if you are approached at your current company and asked if you are looking outside for a new position? The best advice for this situation is it depends. One company may be open to hear why and then offer you a new role and counter offer what you are seeking. Another company may upon hearing “yes, you are looking” either let you go or make your life miserable within the limits of the law. Odds are you will know best how to handle your current company regarding your external search.
