Eight & Bob has one of the most interesting stories behind the brand’s creation, linked to none other than former US president John F. Kennedy.
The story goes that a very young JFK, possibly 20 at the time in 1937, was vacationing from college on the French Riviera when he bumped into perfumer Albert Fouquet, the son of a Parisian aristocrat.
Striking up a conversation, Kennedy asked the Frenchman what fragrance he was wearing. Not only did he get an answer but a fragrance sample was left for him at his hotel with a note that read, “in this jar, you will find the dash of French glamour that your American personality lacks.”
JFK returned to the States and wrote to Fouquet asking him for eight samples for his friends who loved the scent and added that “if your production allows, another one for Bob,” referring to his brother Robert Kennedy.
Fouquet was happy to send the small order to Kennedy, labeling the samples “Eight & Bob” and the fragrance brand was born!
Word has it that the perfume became a hit with JFK’s father Joe Kennedy’s Hollwood pals and soon Fouquet was receiving orders from the likes of Jimmy Stewart and Cary Grant.
When Fouquet died in a car accident in 1939, their family butler Phillippe continued to fill orders until World War II started and he was forced to resign.
The last few shipments were apparently shipped inside books, placed snugly into compartments that were cut out, so that the Nazis would not seize the perfume bottles.
Although the formula for the fragrance was guarded and kept secret, the Fouquet family was able to recover it and relaunce Eight & Bob in 2012, some 75 years after its discovery by John F. Kennedy!
Keeping true to its history, the fragrance is being marketed inside a book – just like the original that was hidden from Germans during the onset of World War II.
Eight & Bob is described as a “bright, elegant and elite” fragrance that is very long lasting – up to 12 hours, say some.
The woodsy vanilla fragrance has a top note of ginger, cardamom, lemon, and bergamot, with a heart of cedar wood, nuts, essencia cistus and guaiacum wood. At its base is patchouli, sandal, ambergris and vanilla.
An added bonus is the rare “Andrea” plant extract from the Andes Mountains in Chile which can only be harvested in December and January, with only 7 percent of the harvest being usable.
Some say that the dry-down is a little too vanilla-like for a man’s fragrance while another reviewer claims that Eight & Bob dries down to vanilla and silver ice after beginning with leather and frankincense and myrrh.
This Old World fragrance apparently epitomizes the era in which it was created. Per several reviews, Eight & Bob can also be worn by women, so it’s more of a unisex fragrance.
A 100 ml EDT spray bottle of Eight & Bob sells for $195 at Bergdorf Goodman but the fragrance can also be found at Neiman Marcus.
While it may not be the most reasonably priced fragrance out there, Eight & Bob certainly seems to be gaining in popularity!
