There’s nothing quite like curling up on a snack surrounded couch for a good old fashion Creature Feature. Classic monsters of the celluloid screen, such as the Creature from the Black Lagoon and Frankenstein have inflicted terror and excitement on viewers for years.
For the sake of argument Creature Features are films that feature creatures, (imagine that). In other words, Monster Movies. Giant sharks, alligators, snakes or anything naturally occurring in nature that has simply been “king sized” will not be discussed in this list, neither will alien creatures.
This list contains a few of the best monsters, whose looks are terrifying, whose origins are unknown and whose demise seems impossible… at least through the first act and a half or so.
While there have been many great creatures added to the genre over the last 25 years, this list only contains 5 personal favorites.
Two vacationing siblings encounter a flesh-eating creature known as the creeper. He is an ancient being allowed to feed every 23 years on the 23rd Spring and everything he consumes becomes him. He is seemingly invincible due to his ability to regenerate anything. Limbs and organs alike are consumed to replenish what the creature needs before returning to hibernation.
As if being trapped in cave weren’t terrifying enough for the women in this film, throw in some primal, feral, murderous cave dwellers to shake things up a bit more. These creatures are blind, but have bat-like hearing and a keen sense of smell. Having evolved from their environment these creatures are made to thrive in the complete darkness that is their hunting grounds.
This fungal and parasitic creature is on a sinister mission. It infects anything warm blooded and completely takes control, leaving its host in a twisting, contorting, zombie-like state. Once it has made itself comfortable, the host begins to excrete a black sludge and sharp spores, or “splinters” used to infect others in an attempt to grow larger.
The 25 story high creature wreaking havoc on New York City retains an air of mystery for much of the film, as you only get glimpses of the beast between buildings. It seems impervious to any pain the military throws at it. The creature also sheds smaller parasite-like monsters from its body. These dog-sized, vicious beasts scatter around swiftly, attacking everything in their 4-eyed line of sight causing its victims to bleed from the eyes and their torsos to explode.
The creatures known as the Graboid species, are carnivores with worm-like bodies. They have giant beaks that when opened, have hooked shaped claw segments and three tongues that function like tentacles, seemingly with minds of their own. They live underground, have no sight, but can feel the vibrations above them. That is how the stalk their prey. They have immense strength; trucks, farm equipment, mobile homes, anything that gets in the way of their potential meal will be destroyed.
