While heavy storms drenched an already soggy Austin with up to nine inches of rain last night, Portugal. The Man was busy recording their debut Austin City Limits TV (ACL TV) taping in front of an enthusiastic studio audience. The quintet from Portland played a psych-rock heavy, 13-song set that drew heavily from their acclaimed latest album, “Evil Friends” produced by Danger Mouse. The band set the tone for the evening with opening song, “All Your Light (Times Like These)” which stretched into an extended jam before playing the title track to their recent release. Singer, John Gourley‘s falsetto together with the organ-infused, psychedelic guitars of his band mates produces a unique sound that hints at psych-era Beatles. The act has included a cover of “Helter Skelter” at past performances.
The band had a single hiccup, stopping a minute into “The Sun”. Gourley apologized, “I got nervous.” The group began the song again, playing it flawlessly. Following the song bassist, Zach Carothers explained, “Austin, Texas was the first place we played that song live… um, that was the first time we played it.”
Portugal. The Man delved into their influences again playing a sublime cover of the chorus and first verse of Pink Floyd‘s classic, “Another Brick in The Wall Part 2” before seguing into their hit, “Purple, Yellow, Red and Blue” to finish an amazing set. The crowd favorite worked fans into a frenzy. After a standing ovation, the band left the stage. They came back for a single encore, the delicate, “Sleep Forever.”
That was not the only point in the show Portugal. The Man segued from one song to the next. From “Evil Friends” the band shifted into “Day Man” from the TV show “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” before easing into anthem “So American.” The well-planned set list that resulted in a nearly continuous stream of great music was a hat tip to jam bands like the Grateful Dead and Widespread Panic.
The episode will air on PBS early next year. Watch the ACL TV website for updates on show schedules, upcoming tapings, photos and videos. Check out fans photos and few shots by ACL TV photographer, Scott Newton in our slideshow.
