Filter took a break from their current Self Inflicted Tour and headlined Saturday, October 26, 2013, in Austin, Texas, as part of the Hullabaloo Halloween Festival, which featured comedy acts, BMX riders doing stunts on a half-pipe, and Austin-based opening band, Dirty Wormz. They played at Huns Field which is mostly used for rugby games, but despite the unusual venue for a Filter show, and dismal turnout, Filter performed as if they had sold-out an arena.
Frontman Richard Patrick joked with fans before their first song, referring to the setting/venue as a “Backyard BBQ”. No security guards banning you from the foot of the stage, a large grassy field with people sitting in lawn chairs, and Texas Shiner Bock beer being served. Indeed it did feel like a backyard BBQ, and because of that, the show was an intimate experience like no other.
Filter played a variety of songs off their albums, ranging from “Dose” (Short Bus album), to “Trip Like I Do” (Spawn soundtrack), to their latest radio single “Surprise”, from the album The Sun Comes Out Tonight.
Richard interacted with the fans on a personal level. He allowed the crowd to sing into his microphone (see slideshow of pictures), and would often grab a fan’s phone and video record parts of their performance. His ruthless howl combined with Jonny Radtke’s fierce guitar playing reinforces why these two musicians are business partners.
This was Filters first time back to Austin with their new lineup. Ex-bassist Phil Buckman was replaced with bassist Tim Kelleher, who has played with 30 Seconds to Mars and also did the musical Rock of Ages. His performance was quite impressive considering he learned all the Filter songs in just two days. Drummer Jeff Fabb (In This Moment, Black Label Society) tears it up on the drums. He has honed his technique to perfection. Their new lineup is electrifying and is conveyed by the amount of fun they are having on stage with each other.
Filter ended the set with the infamous “Hey Man Nice Shot” from their platinum debut album Short Bus. Richard Patrick invited fans to join him at the merch table for a meet-and-greet session, as he graciously did at the Summerland Tour back in July. Drummer Jeff Fabb (who recently made headlines) also engaged with fans, signed autographs and took pictures.
Filter has been touring since April, starting with the Summerland Tour, then with Stone Temple Pilots, and is currently on their headlining Self Inflicted Tour. To learn more about Filter, visit their website here, or follow them on Facebook or Twitter.
