There was a young man who out of peer pressure and in an effort to grow up and fit in. Wanting his boyfriend, at the time, to like him more and see him as cool and grown up, decided to try cocaine for the first time.
That first hit was in the back of his Mustang on a Seal cassette box. He knew right before that first line that his life would change forever but he had no idea how much. For the next 16 years there were many drugs.
He did drugs for company, to fit in, for a bed to sleep in, to feel love, to make it through the next day, to make it through the night, sometimes to fill the void in his heart and sometimes to not feel anymore, and there were times he didn’t want to wake up.
Much older he learned that there was more to life than that and a judge agreed that he should go to rehab. So on June 21, 2007 he walked through the doorway to a new chapter of his life. That’s when he learned what it took to be a man.
You probably guessed by now that that man is me and now over six years living a life of Recovery, clean & sober, I would never have imagined what twists and turns my life would have taken. Today I feel blessed that I came out of that tunnel.
That loneliness that I felt in my soul was only temporarily filled by the abuse I caused myself and now I am starting to feel more comfortable in my own skin. I actually enjoy every single emotion and feeling. Even the ones that make me cry.
So today I am proud to announce another step in finding myself, a journey that has been handed to me to see where it takes me and how I can help myself and others, something that I had worked for but never thought of as a reality.
Steve Thompson from PURE Motive Radio has invited me to join the network with my own show. Starting Monday, September 9, 2013 at 5:00 PM PST, “Life in the Gray” will be a show about finding different ways to live in Recovery.
I started my Recovery life at a rehab center in Dickinson, Texas and made great friends in Houston. When I moved to Laguna Beach, CA I had a hard time fitting into the AA rooms so I had to find a way to carry Recovery me everywhere I went.
Spirituality, support groups, friends, family, even strangers help me stay on the path, being able to write for the examiner, hosting podcast, doing public presentations, all part of my Recovery. Even doing spiritual readings helps me to appreciate being clean & sober.
So now I invite you to be part of my journey. Remember:
